Nicola Conte is a musician, producer, DJ and composer whose work has helped shape the Italian and international jazz scene. His sound draws from a rich spectrum of influences — from 1950s and ’60s jazz and bossa nova to Brazilian music, soul, soundtracks and Afro-inspired rhythms — all woven together into his distinctive vision of cosmic jazz.
Born and raised in Bari, Conte founded the influential Fez cultural movement in the early 1990s, bringing together musicians, DJs, artists, designers and passionate record collectors around a shared love of music and culture. What began as a local creative community soon became an important reference point for Italy’s acid-jazz movement, connecting Bari with the wider international scene.
From his early work with Schema Records to acclaimed releases on labels such as Blue Note, Impulse! and MPS, Conte has continued to explore the space between jazz, dance music and global sounds. His collaborations have brought together some of the most exciting musicians from across the jazz world, while his live performances remain rooted in the warmth and freedom of a true jazz ensemble.
Always open to new influences, Conte approaches music as a meeting point between cultures, eras and ideas — creating a sound that feels both deeply rooted and constantly in motion.
