Canvasback Wellness Center

Canvasback Wellness Center We feature a demonstration kitchen cafeteria and Farm-to-Fork programs. It has evolved as we see the needs in the community. Come visit us for more information!

Canvasback Wellness is a health center partnering with RMI Ministry of Health and Human Services and local and global allies to fight diabetes and NCDs through nutrition and exercise. Canvasback Wellness Center was founded in 2006 by Canvasback Mission, after then-president Amata Kabua asked that a Wellness Center be started in his country. We currently serve breakfast and lunch in our cafeteria-s

tyle restaurant Monday through Friday, where we provide healthy and delicious meals. We have a gym free to the public, open 6 am to 7 pm Monday through Thursday, and 6-2 Friday, with exercise equipment and both free and paid classes available. We have several gardens which we are happy to show you, and we can even help you build your own garden. Four times a year we have interventions which are free to the participants, who get 3 meals a day for 2 weeks, exercise classes, cooking classes, and lots of helpful information about how to beat diabetes and other chronic diseases; you can sign up at the Wellness Center. We also are reaching out to communities by doing programs Thursday nights in the community. We have done four consecutive weeks in Uliga, and five in Rita. We hope to do every community on the atoll.

Proud team moment! 🌟

Four of our Canvasback Wellness Center staff members are currently diving deep into an intensive Diabetes Self-Care Management workshop, teaming up with the Ministry of Health and Human Services.

We want to give a major shoutout to the speaker, Dr. Melliza β€œMillay” C. Young, MD, MSGH, CDCES from the NACDD Islands Team, for sharing her incredible regional expertise. πŸ‘‘ Miss Marshall Islands Contestants Visit the Wellness Center! πŸ‘‘

We had the absolute pleasure of hosting the beautiful contestants of the Miss Marshall Islands pageant at the Canvasback Wellness Center today!

After their morning visit to the hospital, the young women stopped by for lunch to refuel with a delicious, nutrient-packed meal. The team loved seeing them dive into the healthy menu, which featured:

β€’ Local Favorites: Shushami, fresh fish wraps, and hearty fish soup
β€’ Wholesome Sides: Brown rice, fresh green salad, and Chef Neilan’s delicious, nutrient-dense broccoli smoothie
β€’ A New Favorite: Vegetarian pancit made with textured soy protein!

For several of the contestants, it was their very first time trying textured soy. The staff was thrilled to introduce them to this incredible, fiber-full, and healthy meat substituteβ€”and it's safe to say it was a hit!

It was a true honor for the team to host these inspiring young women for lunch, alongside Secretary of Health Francyne Wase-Jacklick.

🎢 Make sure to turn the sound on! In the video, the women beautifully sing a song to the Wellness Center staff to thank them for the meal, a gesture that absolutely warmed everyone's hearts.

🌿 International Recognition for a Local Solution 🌿

We are honored to share that the Healthy Futures School & Community Garden Cookbook has been nominated in three categories for the 2026 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards:

🏝️ South Pacific – Free Category
🍎 School Meals with Recipes
πŸ’š Health and Nutrition

While this recognition celebrates a cookbook, it also recognizes something much larger.

The Healthy Futures Cookbook was created to help address some of the most pressing health challenges facing the Marshall Islands by promoting nutrition education, healthy eating habits, school and community gardens, and the use of locally grown foods.

Through practical recipes, gardening knowledge, and wellness education, the cookbook empowers children and families to make healthier choices while strengthening food security and preserving cultural food traditions.

This nomination highlights the power of community-driven solutions and the impact that can be achieved when educators, healthcare professionals, students, volunteers, and partners work together toward a healthier future.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Jo Dean, author of the Healthy Futures Cookbook, whose vision, dedication, and work helped bring this project to life. Her passion for improving community health and empowering future generations through nutrition and education is reflected throughout every page of this remarkable resource.

The official shortlist will be announced on October 20, 2026, with the awards ceremony planned for late November.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this achievement possible. Together, we are planting seeds for healthier generations to come. 🌱

πŸŽ‰ School is in session, but the principals were the ones learning today! 🍎✨

What an absolute privilege it was for the Canvasback Wellness Center team to partner up with the MOHHS for a high-energy, 2-hour and 20-minute workshop on nutrition and healthy living! We got to hang out with public school principals from all across the Marshall Islands at the annual Principals Institute conference right here in Majuro. 🌴

But we didn’t just talk the talkβ€”we walked the walk! πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’¨

We helped these amazing school leaders check their blood sugar and get their health screenings done.

🎁 Bonus excitement: Three lucky principals walked away with raffle prizes for free meals at the wellness center just for stepping up and getting their health screenings done! πŸ₯—πŸ†
