Juice packets and flexible food pouches are super convenient, but nearly impossible to recycle!

These pouches are manufactured by laminating aluminum foil directly between layers of plastic film to keep drinks shelf-stable without refrigeration. Because the metal and plastic layers cannot be separated during processing, used pouches end up straight in the refuse stream. Blending fresh, seasonal Saint Lucian fruits for homemade juices and storing them in glass jars or reusable silicone pouches keeps your snacks healthy and zero-waste!

Single-use plastic razors are built for quick convenience, but create lasting plastic waste!

Because metal safety blades are permanently molded into plastic handles with rubber grips, facilities cannot safely disassemble them for recycling. Sharp embedded blades also pose safety risks for waste collection workers. Switching to a classic stainless steel safety razor allows you to replace only the metal blade, which can be safely collected for metal recycling!

That glossy, glittery wrapping paper might look festive, but it cannot be recycled with regular paper!

Laminated gift wrap, foil papers, and greeting cards covered in plastic coatings or glitter contain non-paper additives that do not dissolve during pulping. Once mixed with standard cardboard or paper, they ruin entire recycling batches. Wrapping gifts with reusable fabric cloths (Furoshiki) or plain recyclable kraft paper tied with natural twine creates a beautiful, zero-waste presentation!

Chewing gum packaging generates multiple layers of non-recyclable micro-litter!

From tiny plastic shrink wraps and foil-lined paper wrappers to the synthetic rubber base of conventional gum itself, these small items easily slip through waste collection and pollute roadsides and waterways. Choosing natural plant-based mints or gums in recyclable tin packaging keeps micro-plastics off our streets and out of the environment!

Shipping mailers and bubble wrap are great for protecting fragile packages, but tough to recycle!

Plastic air cushioning and bubble wrap are made from flexible LDPE film, which snags mechanical sorters. Paper padded mailers lined with interior plastic bubbles are equally tricky because the plastic lining cannot be peeled off the outer paper wall. Reusing bubble wrap and padded envelopes for storage or future shipping is the best way to extend their lifecycle!

How do you upcycle shipping boxes and mailers at home? Drop your tips below!

Single-use plastic forks, knives, and spoons are a major hazard for local waste streams!

Due to their small size, low weight, and brittle plastic construction, disposable utensils fall through sorting machinery grids or break during processing. Under Saint Lucia's environmental acts regulating single-use plastics, choosing reusable cutlery helps keep non-recyclable plastic out of our soil and oceans. Stashing a small wooden utensil set in your bag makes eating on the go stress-free and eco-friendly!

That paper coffee cup from your favorite café isn't as easily recyclable as it looks!

While the outside feels like ordinary paper, the interior is sealed with a microscopic plastic lining to prevent hot liquids from soaking through. This plastic coating fused to paper fibers makes it impossible for standard facilities to process, sending millions of cups to landfills. Keeping a reusable travel mug in your bag or car keeps daily coffee routines completely zero-waste!

Squeezable lotion, cream, and condiment tubes present a double recycling challenge!

Most squeeze tubes fuse multiple layers of different plastics and metals together to stay flexible, making material separation impossible. Additionally, leftover product trapped inside contaminates surrounding recyclable materials. Choosing lotion bars, glass jars, or refillable containers keeps multi-layer plastic out of our island refuse!

Thin plastic wrap might keep leftovers fresh, but it cannot be recycled!

Cling film is made from soft, sticky plastics that easily tangle sorting equipment and tear into tiny pieces during processing. Once soiled with kitchen oils, it becomes impossible to process cleanly. Swapping cling wrap for washable beeswax wraps or covered glass bowls eliminates daily plastic waste in your kitchen!

What is your favorite plastic-free way to cover leftovers in the fridge? Tell us below!

Single-use plastic grocery bags create major challenges for waste collection systems!

Because lightweight thin-film plastic stretches easily, it gets caught in facility machinery and causes equipment jams. Plastic carrier bags also break down into dangerous microplastics that pollute marine life and soil across our island. Bringing reusable cloth totes on every market run keeps single-use plastic out of Saint Lucia's environment!
