Tomorrow, Saturday, is your last chance to spend a night with and her band at Aaliya’s Books.

Esmeralda has been performing at Aaliya’s and successfully raising our spirits and voices for more than six years. We love her. We love her band. Ever since spotted Esmeralda at and told us we had to book her for Aaliya’s, it has been our huge privilege and pleasure to watch her performance develop and original songs enter her repertoire, bringing us to tears (“Beirut, I’m sorry”) and to our feet (Laying on the Couch).

We’ll be sad on Saturday knowing it is the last time we sing along with her in our space as we know it, but we also know that she’ll bring revelry capable of taking the edge off any gloom.

On Sunday, the Assad regime fell, and a moment of hope, unthinkable days earlier and unknown to us since a glimmer of something similar in late 2019, swept across the Levant. In Aaliya’s, a big, unchallengeable smile found its way to our faces and the faces of our customers. It felt like at last someone had opened the shutters and let the light in.

It is as we stand in the wonder of that brightly lit moment of hope for the future that we bring you a small announcement of our own future plans: For more than eight years, Aaliya’s Books has operated from our home at The Alleyway on Gouraud Street. We need not reiterate how tumultuous and at times downright dark (often literally) much of that time has been. But those who have spent time inside our space will also know that many moments of laughter, love and shared humanity have characterised our years together. It has been wonderful. Now, however, the time has come to step bravely into the future: Aaliya’s Books will permanently close its Gemmayzeh doors on Friday, December 20th.

Our next chapter will look different, but rest assured that there will be a next chapter. This is not the end of Aaliya’s Books and the spirit that drives it.

We are so grateful to all of you, near and far, who have made Aaliya’s Aaliya’s, and in our last 10 days in Gemmayzeh we want to celebrate that with as many of you as possible. Please do pass by for books, coffees, drinks, dancing, and a full lineup of events:

🎷 Live jazz with the Friday Night Bookshop Band on Friday, December 13 from 9pm
🎸 and her band live on Saturday, December 14 from 9pm
💃 Dancing with from 9pm on Tuesday, December 17
🎷 The final live jazz night with the Friday Night Bookshop Band on (unusually) Thursday, December 19th from 9pm
🥂 Our last night — a gathering of friends old and new in the spirit of this place where so many of us have found a home — on Friday, December 20th all day, but especially from 8pm onwards.

We hope to see you there, as we celebrate not just an ending but what we hope will be the beginning of something new. 🌟

This is an old photograph. We haven’t had a sign up outside Aaliya’s in years. We never repaired it after the port explosion. We thought about, and talked about, doing so often, but the pace of life and crisis pushed it down the priority list. And so, today, there is no sign outside our door. We miss the days to which that sign belonged — a time of hope, a time bristling with prospects for change, for a country and a world that might get better not worse.

Sign or no sign, we’re open today from 4pm to 10pm and serving a combination of perhaps necessary comforts: company, conversation and cocktails.
