๐Ÿ‡ Rabbit Farming and the Blue Economy ๐ŸŸ

When people talk about the Blue Economy, many think only about fishing, ports, and marine transport. But the Blue Economy is also about creating sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities, and rabbit farming has a major role to play.

Rabbit farming offers a smart opportunity for coastal regions because it:
1. Requires minimal land space
2. Uses less water compared to many livestock systems
3. Supports urban and peri-urban farming
4. Creates jobs for youth and women
5. Promotes climate-smart agriculture

In coastal counties like Mombasa, rabbit farming can complement the Blue Economy by strengthening:
๐Ÿ– Food and nutrition security
๐Ÿ’ผ MSME and youth enterprise development
โ™ป๏ธ Organic agriculture through rabbit manure and urine utilization
๐ŸŒ Sustainable and eco-friendly food systems

One of the most exciting opportunities is the linkage between rabbit farming and aquaculture. Fresh rabbit droppings can be directly utilized in fish ponds as feed and also support the growth of plankton and natural fish feed organisms, helping reduce dependence on expensive commercial fish feeds. This creates an integrated and sustainable farming system where waste from one enterprise becomes a valuable input for another.

Rabbit manure also improves soil fertility for crop farming, making rabbit farming a key driver of circular agriculture and integrated coastal food production systems.

As Kenya continues to expand the Blue Economy agenda, we must embrace innovative and inclusive agribusiness models that empower communities beyond the ocean itself.

๐Ÿ‡๐ŸŸ Rabbit farming is not just livestock production, it is a pathway to sustainable coastal economic transformation and integrated food systems.

Rabbit breeding and record keeping go hand in hand. If you're missing one, doesn't do the other. Otherwise inbreeding is in foresight, and that's what is going ruin your breeding stock

On 20th April, 2026 through the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK), Millimag Rabbits Farm (MRF) received an invitation to participate in a sensitization session during the WARECA Real Focus Group AGM held in Likoni, Mombasa County. The session aimed to sensitize participants...particularly PWDs together with their caregivers at APDK, on rabbit farming practices, highlight the programs being implemented by MRF, and promote rabbit farming as a viable and sustainable livelihood option. Particular emphasis was placed on livelihood sustainability, demonstrating how rabbit farming can provide a consistent source of income, improve household nutrition, and enhance resilience among vulnerable groups through low-cost, high-return agricultural practices. Additionally, the session served as an advocacy platform to encourage the recognition and integration of rabbit farming as a key enterprise within community development initiatives

Did You Know?
Rabbits can eat their own droppings (called cecotropes) to re-digest nutrients and stay healthy. It may sound strange, but itโ€™s completely normal!
