Covid-19 is forcing economies and companies to speed their digital transformation to meet the sudden boom in home working and online shopping. The crisis is also driving expansion of artificial intelligence and automatisation. With new online tools like video conferences now in wide-use, global business trips are set to decline post-crisis, with a significant knock on effect on jobs in administrative support, events, travel and transport. An increase in temporary and part-time jobs is forecast, with little stability and benefits as companies become reluctant to return to full-time employment models.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) claims almost 1.6 billion informal economy workers are significantly impacted by lockdown measures worldwide. This is likely to be hard-hitting for vulnerable groups such as women and persons with disabilities (PWDs) as they are more likely to hold these types of positions over formal roles.

More than one in six young people, aged 18-29, have stopped working since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Youth unemployment rate was already higher than any other group. If young people’s “talent and energy is side-lined by a lack of opportunity or skills it will damage all our futures and make it much more difficult to re-build a better, post-COVID economy.”

The multiple shocks facing young people from the coronavirus pandemic could result in them being scarred throughout their working lives, creating a "lockdown generation," the United Nations' labor agency warned.

Word for the week: Teleworking.

Teleworking means working from home or remotely using modern technology and telecommunications to remain in touch with your employer or business. It allows individuals to work either at home, a local cafe with WiFi, or at a local telework center for one or more days each week, or full time. 3 out of 4 young people globally work in the informal Sector. In Kenya, 9 out of 10 people worked in the informal sector in 2019. Employed youth get their hours cut or laud off first in case of emergencies, such as COVID-19. This means they are at higher risks to loose their jobs. As everyone response to crisis, EmployAbility Pathways is here to walk with you, as we acknowledge that you have skills that need to be put into work. Like us and talk to us.

Crises fall hardest on the most vulnerable. When it comes to the social and economic impacts of the pandemic, young people are more likely to feel the pinch harder.
