Kienyeji Chicken; Where is the money?

Kienyeji Chicken is the most preferred especially by the health conscious people.

However, rearing a chick to maturity not only takes a long time but has several challenges.

These include slow growth, diseases, predators and feeds. If you have space, you have the advantage of free ranging. That way, you cut down on costs.

But where is the money? For aspiring farmers, you must have the numbers to make economic sense. Don't rear your chicks to maturity, sell them at all stages. Or when mature, sell them at once. That way you make something substantial.

With the high cost of feeds currently, it becomes extremely difficult to make a profit when relying on commercial feeds. Poultry farmers must seek alternative ways to sustain feeding especially for small scale.

Large scale farmers benefit from economies of scale. Even if one makes one bob profit from 10,000 birds, they would still be in business. This is not the case for those with less numbers, for instance 300.

However, farming like any other business is a long term venture. To mitigate this, some poultry farmers exit the business altogether in such times. Leaving the veterans who keep going even during tough times.

Before you venture into this business. Answer the question; Is it a short or long term project??

What are the risk factors and how do i mitigate the same?

Wishing you successful ventures.

Cold season is here. What next?

During a cold season like this July, poultry farming experiences major challenges. This mostly occurs in cold areas. Just like human beings, chicken require lots of energy to fight the cold and remain warm.

If you are a Kienyeji chicken farmer or rear improved Kienyeji, you need to boost carbohydrates intake. If you have stocked maize, that is good enough. But you could also turn it into 'chenga,' to ease consumption.

During this season, the chicken are likely to record an eggs drop as most of the energy is reserved for keeping the body warm.

Maintain a balanced diet all through. Most important, you must vaccinate your chicken and follow the vaccination schedule religiously.

Newcastle is a killer disease. With a dose of 200 chicks going for an average of 250/= you need not loose your chicken.

Just like any business venture, poultry farming has its own challenges. You must have a strategy to mitigate risks. eg. Selling all your flock at some point to recover your costs and introduce a new flock. It helps in disease control.
