Did you know, chicken have a right-eye and a left-eye system?

Chickens have a larger range of peripheral vision also known as side vision, the ability to see objects and movement outside of the direct line of vision.

Compared to birds and other creatures including us chickens have a smaller range of binocular vision, the ability to maintain visual focus on an object with both eyes, creating a single visual image.

A chicken has a right-eye system and a left-eye system, each with different and complementary capabilities.

The chickens right-eye system is best for events that requiring recognition, such as identifying items like food.

The left-eye system works best for activities involving depth perception, which is why a chicken viewing an approaching hawk from the sky is likely to look with difficulty or concentration cautiously at the predator using its left eye.

3 DON’TS OF KEEPING CHICKENS

Below are the three most important things you must think of when thinking about your poultry farming, especially on the size of your flock.

1. Don’t keep more chickens than you have space for.
2. Don’t keep more chickens than you have time to care for.
3. Don’t keep more chickens than you can afford to maintain.

Dual purpose chicken breeds

Most poultry famers in Kenya keep chickens for both eggs and meat. Dual purpose chicken breeds offer you the best of both worlds, but don’t lay as well as layer breeds and don’t grow as fast or as big as meat breeds, but they lay better than meat breed and grow faster and larger than layer breeds.

Dual purpose chicken breeds are the classic chickens that our parents usually farm in our backyards. They are known to have a considerable amount of meat on their bones compared to the layer breeds and lay more eggs than the meat breeds for the same amount of feed they eat.

Most chicken breeds in Kenya are classified as dual purpose chicken breeds.

Meat Breed Chickens

The tastiest meat bread chickens in Kenya are the Kienyeji chicken. Most Kenyans enjoy their superior taste and healthy benefits. They also tend to be pricier at the supermarket and from your local poultry farmers.

Efficient meat breed chickens share four features:
• They grow and feather fast.
• They reach target weight in minimum time.
• They are broad breasted.

The faster the meat breed chicken grows to butchering weight, the more tender it is and the cheaper it is to raise.

Commercial meat breed chicken eats just about 0.9 kilograms of feed for each kilogram of weight it gains.
