That’s what we call kitchen with the view.

We put the pan on, and the valley outside keeps stealing our attention. Nothing about this kitchen is for show - the burners work, the counter gets used, dinner actually gets cooked here.

Some places hand you a microwave and call it a kitchen. This one has a stove you'd actually use, a counter that's seen real work, and a window that makes staying in for dinner the better option, not the fallback one.

People are always surprised we're still in the pool this late in September.

Around Volterra it’s still warm enough for three generations to spend it outside, half in the water, half just watching from the loungers with a book.

We've noticed it takes about three days.

The reaching-for-it habit fades first, then the checking-for-notifications reflex, and by day five most guests forget which drawer they put it in.

What's left is the actual sound of the place: cicadas at midday, olive leaves moving with the evening wind, dinner without a length of time attached to it.
