Le Sirenuse is a wonderful place from which to enjoy the simple pleasures of Positano and the spectacular Amalfi Coast. It is a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.'

Le Sirenuse opened in 1951, when four Neapolitan siblings, the Marchesi Aldo, Paolo, Anna and Franco Sersale turned their summer house in Positano into a charming hote

l, overlooking the bay of Positano. Today the 58-room resort is considered one of Italy’s leading seaside luxury hotels, though it still retains the intimate, cultured atmosphere of a private home. Franco, an art connoisseur whose impeccable taste did so much to define Le Sirenuse's signature style, passed away in January 2015. But this remains a cherished family concern. Since 1992, Franco’s son Antonio has looked after the day-to-day running of the hotel, while Carla, Antonio’s wife, designs Le Sirenuse, Positano Mare Collection, a line of beachwear and womenswear inspired by Positano and sold at the Emporio Sirenuse boutique and in selected stores worldwide. Paolo’s daughter Marina created Le Sirenuse’s fragrance and skincare line Eau d’Italie with her husband Sebastián Alvarez Murena, while her sister Giulia curates Le Sirenuse’s much-loved outdoor planting schemes and indoor greenery.

Mise en place is a fine art. Before each meal, experienced maitre Vincenzo Galani and restaurant manager Giulio Fusco run through the reservations list and check every single table, moving a chair half an inch, adjusting the fold of a napkin, buffing up the sparkle of a silver spoon. “The true secret of happiness”, as great 19th century designer William Morris once wrote, “lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of everyday life”.

The hand-painted tiles that line our terrace pool shower are fired, like all our tiles, by Salerno firm Fornace De Martino, in kilns that date back a thousand years. Every single one emerges with a subtly different hue. We love the effect: it’s kind of harmonious and rich at the same time. That’s a note we’re always striving to hit at Le Sirenuse – not just in our artisanal ceramics.

This summer, the cultural conversation has been all about Christopher Nolan’s cinematic spin on the Homerian epic The Odyssey. One stage on Odysseus’ long and hazardous journey is close to our heart, and our home: the hero’s encounter with the Sirens. Le Sirenuse was named for the three islands on the horizon that make our sea view so special, where, legend has it, these fatally seductive creatures lay in wait for mariners. Inspired by the Siren motifs that have long been part of the hotel’s identity, art and décor, our videographer friends at Cultivar have created an evocative reel that lingers on our resident mermaids before sailing to the Siren Islands. The soundtrack is an extract from audio artist Chris Watson’s work Siren Songs – specially commissioned for Le Sirenuse, it is a collage of underwater recordings Chris made around the globe. You will hear waves breaking on the rocky shore of the Le Sirenuse islands – today more commonly known as Li Galli – followed by the haunting ‘song’ of grey seals, which some believe may have given rise to the myth of the Sirens.

Framed by a sinuous shell mosaic, commis chef Antonio Piccolo greets the world from Aldo’s terrace midway through arranging on ice a cornucopia of lobsters, oysters, red king prawns from the waters off Mazara in Sicily, and other denizens of the deep, all ready to be served to guests of our fresh, easy, light and seasonal bar, grill and bistro. It just goes to show that you can be cookin’… without cookin’.
