On Wednesday 12 August, Reykjavík sits in the path of a total solar eclipse. It is the first one visible from the city in nearly 600 years.
Totality begins at 17:48 and lasts a little over a minute. The partial phases run for around an hour on either side, so the event takes up most of the late afternoon.
Almost all of the capital area falls within the path. Visit Reykjavík and the six municipalities are encouraging people to watch close to home rather than drive, and to expect heavier traffic and some temporary road closures.
Please do not look at the sun without certified eclipse glasses at any point while part of it is still visible. Ordinary sunglasses are not enough. Sævar Helgi Bragason has recorded a short guide to watching safely, on the Visit Reykjavík channels.
