Kemuri 🥟 Polish dumplings | ☕ Coffee & cakes
🕒 Mon–Thu: 12–20 | Fri–Sun: 12–21 Kemuri (Japanese for smoke) refers to many things.

For us it's essentially one of our favorite Dj Krush's pieces that we're emotionally attached to. Artwork on the walls by our favourite she-tattooist Acid Habibi resembles smoke-like dudes. It's also a nice word play on Kémur í Kemuri. Last but not least it refers to the name of the city because Reykjavik is a smoky bay after all.

THE STORY BEHIND THE KEMURI NAME.

Did you know that a DJ Krush track called Kemuri was the inspiration behind the name of our little place?

11 years ago, this track became part of the soundtrack to our life together. When we opened Kemuri in Reykjavík, we knew exactly what to call it.

Kemuri means “smoke” in Japanese, and Reykjavík means “Smoky Bay”. And then there’s what we do every day, making dumplings, with clouds of steam very much part of the process.

So somehow, it couldn’t have been a better name for us.

And here we are in 2026. DJ Krush is coming to Reykjavík for Extreme Chill, and Gr**go, the creator of Kemuri and our head chef, will be creating visuals for several artists at the festival.

We couldn’t have imagined a better full-circle moment!

We’ve spent a lot of time testing different proportions until we found the perfect dough, soft, flexible, and just right. We think we nailed it!

This time filled with black lentils - deep, earthy, and full of umami flavour.

We love decorating our cakes with flowers we grow ourselves. Nasturtiums are known for their antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, while marigolds are packed with antioxidants that support eye health, the nervous system and digestion.
Nasturtiums have a peppery flavour, a bit like radish or arugula, while marigolds have a lovely citrusy, herbal taste.

Why eating pączki is not just a pleasure but a ritual?

Fat Thursday traditions go back not only to early Christianity, but even further, when feasting marked the farewell to winter and the welcoming of spring. Eating abundantly had a magical meaning: rich, generous food was believed to secure prosperity for the coming year.

By the 17th century, we already find many recipes for Polish doughnuts. In the famous Compendium ferculorum (1682), they appear under the name “pierożki” - yeast dough pastries, deep-fried and filled with fruit such as wild elderberry or rose.

We especially love that old name pierożki. It resonates with Kemuri vibes 🥟!
