🌑 SOLAR ECLIPSE IN THE VIKING AGE
In Norse mythology, the Sun was personified as the goddess Sól. Every day, she raced across the sky in her chariot, relentlessly pursued by the wolf Sköll. 🐺☀️
When Sköll drew close to Sól, the Sun would grow dark — this is how the myth explained a solar eclipse.
But that was only part of the legend. According to the prophecy of Ragnarök, a day would come when Sköll would finally catch and devour the Sun. 🌑
After Sól’s death, the world would fall into darkness, and the old order of gods and humans would be destroyed.
But there’s an interesting detail: before her death, Sól would give birth to a daughter, who would continue her journey across the sky after Ragnarök. ☀️
So even at the end of the world, the Sun would not disappear forever — a new world would have a new Sun.
⚔️ For the Norse, this was not only a story about fear, but also a reminder that after every ending, a new beginning can come.
