Sharabat, delicious and sweet!”—as the children chant in the video with their iconic Mosuli dialect.

According to my research, “Sharabat” is a traditional Iraqi sweet that has nearly vanished. It is made from melted sugar and lemon, mixed with food coloring, and shaped inside white flour. Across other Iraqi provinces, this classic treat is known by various names such as “Assaliya,” “Abo Al-Assal,” or “Assalat Umm Al-Assal.”

At the gates of the Great Al-Nuri Mosque, innocent hands find joy in selling this traditional sweet, despite the difficult circumstances around them..

The Great Al-Nuri Mosque stands as a witness to nine centuries of Mosul’s ancient civilization, with its Al-Hadba Minaret, after which the city was lovingly named.

It is deeply unfortunate that the monuments and landmarks of our Iraqi and Islamic civilization only receive attention after they suffer destruction. The Great Mosque of Al-Nuri would not have garnered such immense focus or restoration had it not been completely razed to the ground; even more tragic is that it would never have risen from the earth again were it not for the intervention of international agencies.

Countless other monuments and heritage sites across Iraq have eroded, their forms and names wiped from memory through neglect—and perhaps by design. Worse yet, most continue to face daily vandalism and intentional harm, with no clear intent from the concerned authorities to put an end to this destruction.
