Got GST voluntarily, even when I didn’t legally have to. And it changed everything for my food business.
Here’s the full story 👇
The GST threshold for food businesses in India is ₹40 lakhs. I was nowhere close to that number. Everyone around me said don’t bother,it just adds paperwork.
But every time I tried to grow, I kept hitting the same invisible wall.
I wanted to list my products on Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, Amazon, Flipkart. Every single platform asked for one thing before I could even create a seller account,a GSTIN. No GST, no listing. Simple as that. My product wasn’t even getting a chance to be seen.
Then I looked into getting a barcode for retail. If you want your product on a physical shelf,in a supermarket, a specialty store, anywhere ,you need a GS1 barcode. And to apply for a GS1 barcode in India? You guessed it. GSTIN mandatory.
The one that really pushed me over the edge was shipping. I wanted to use one of the most reliable courier partners in the country, known for coverage, reliability, and COD support. Went to register. First thing they asked for? A GSTIN. No exceptions, no workarounds.
I was making a good product. The packaging was sorted. The pricing made sense. But I couldn’t sell online, couldn’t get a barcode, couldn’t ship professionally, all because I assumed GST “wasn’t for me yet.”
So I registered voluntarily.
If you’re building a food brand ,home baker, cloud kitchen, packaged food, anything ,don’t wait for the threshold to force you. GST registration is not a tax burden at this stage. It is your entry ticket to the real market.
I’ve put together a complete step-by-step guide on how to register voluntarily, documents needed, the exact process, and what to do right after you get your GSTIN.
