Paul Dempsey and Pauline Roe In 2003 we moved to our present premises here in Tarmonbarry, Co.

We opened 'The Purple Onion' in May 2000, first situated in Conlons Church street Athlone, we then moved to O' Neills, Mardyke street, Athlone in September 2001. Roscommon

Our food philosophy is simple, quality ingredients, classic combinations, unfussy and unpretentious.

mmon lamb prepared, and then, in to the sous vide for four hours of slow cooking. Sourcing quality suppliers including Connemara Smokehouse for smoked salmon and gravadlax

Jack McCarthy from Kanturk for black pudding and Irish 'pastrami'. Kardemumma from Sligo for fabulous teas. Jane Russell for some of the best sausages you can get. Featherbed Farm, super indulgent ice creams. All desserts are made by Pauline, who has been making our Toblerone cheesecake since we were based in Athlone. Chocolate is always either Valrhona, Caco Barry or my favourite Callebaute. We serve most of our wines by the glass, pichet and bottle. An art gallery above the bar displays a wide range of established and up and coming artists with an emphasis on quality.

Dive into inky, blackberry-and-pepper Saperavi, step up to the oak-aged Saperavi Reserve, then freshen things up with the textured White made from Rkatsiteli and Kisi grapes and the aromatic Orange made in traditional Georgian Qvevri with its dried-fruit, citrus-peel edge. Look who dropped into the Purple Onion recently,
The shy and retiring Tom Gallagher.

It eas difficult to get a word out of him.
we know that he hails from Roscommon, Boyle actually.

Thankfully he brought some of his wonderful wines for us to try.

Diga
Created Tom Gallagher, the Diga Montsant is a distinguished red wine from the Montsant region of Spain. This vintage is a blend of Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from a single vineyard site that is organically farmed with the help of renowned winemaker Toni Coca. It features bold strawberry and plum flavors that transition into notes of cassis and blackcurrant. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and well-balanced with a refreshing acidity and smooth yet present tannins. Produced in a limited run of only 2,400 bottles.
