THREE ON THE SPIN: FERMOY LADIES DIG DEEP FOR FIRST CLEAN SHEET
On a cool evening in Carrig Park, Fermoy Ladies told two stories: one of control, the other of resistance. The scoreboard will read 1โ0, but it wonโt show the work it took to keep it that way.
It was the proverbial game of two halves. The opening period belonged to Fermoy. There was a sharpness and clarity about them, the look of a side buoyed by two convincing results and beginning to trust itself. After 12 minutes, that belief paid off. Giada Talossi crossed from the corner and clinical Fianait Crowley did the rest.
It could easily have been more. After beating three defenders running down the right, Rรณisรญn Barnes clattered the post soon after, a reminder of the fine margins involved. On several occasions, Fermoy broke through one-on-one against the Carrigaline goalkeeper, only to be twarted. Fermoy had Carrigaline on the ropes but couldnโt land the crucial second blow. Leave a game alive, and it has a habit of coming back to haunt you.
The second half gradually turned, then completely. Fermoyโs rhythm vanished under pressure as space closed and urgency grew. From that point on, it became a test of defensive resolve. Olivia Sheehan, introduced for her debut, impressed with her tracking back while also carrying a threat going forward. Behind her, the back four stood firm: clearance after clearance, block after block. No panic, just resolve.
Then came the moment. A Carrigaline penalty, the kind that can shift everything. It sailed over the bar. Relief, yes. Comfort, no. From there until the final whistle, it was all about character.
In goal, Ross was outstanding, calm amid the chaos and making the saves that mattered. The kind of presence that settles everyone around her.
By the end, Fermoy were running on instinct as much as energy. Not at their best, but still standing. And sometimes, thatโs enough. Three wins on the spin. A first clean sheet. Not flawless, but plenty to take into training and something real to build on.
And while Fermoy were chasing a hat-trick on the pitch, Eskimo Pizza quietly delivered off it, sponsoring a third consecutive ladies match and keeping the players fed and spirits high.
