According to the legend, many princes and noblemen came to seek Mandalika’s hand in marriage. To avoid conflict and bloodshed among her suitors, Mandalika decided to hold a traditional race or competition. The suitors would race to win her hand, and the one who succeeded would marry her.
The race was intense, and in some versions, it is said to have taken place on a beautiful beach or along the coast of Lombok. During the race, Mandalika, feeling overwhelmed by the chaos and the potential for conflict, chose to sacrifice herself to prevent a bloody war among her suitors.
In some versions of the story, Mandalika threw herself into the sea or a nearby river, symbolizing her desire to end the conflict and bring peace to her people. Her sacrifice is believed to have brought tranquility and harmony to Lombok.
Today, the legend of Mandalika is celebrated through various cultural events, including the annual Pesta Mandalika festival, which honors her sacrifice and symbolizes peace, unity, and the rich cultural heritage of Lombok.
The story has become an integral part of Lombok’s identity, inspiring tourism, cultural preservation, and local pride. The Mandalika International Street Circuit, a famous racing track, is also named after her, reflecting her enduring legacy.
