Gouthe was born from family, from the warmth of home, from the joy of feeding people, and from the desire to create a place where others could feel welcome. Racine then became the expansion of that feeling — a deeper embodiment of our “roots” and where we came from.
Many pieces inside Racine carried stories long before the restaurant existed. Furniture and hanging lamps came from my mother’s restaurant in Jakarta and my parents-in-law in France, holding more than 40 years of memories. The joglo represented Java, where my parents came from. Brochette reflected Indonesian sate, while the sauces, flavours, and dishes carried traces of our cultures and journeys.
The uniforms were designed by , blending Indonesian heritage with modernity and flow. The woodwork was made from recycled wood by local carpenter Faizal in a French-inspired style. For the kitchen, we chose , a local Indonesian brand with international standards.
Racine was meant to open on 7 June 2024. My father had been waiting for that moment with so much excitement. But sadly, he passed away on 1 June, only days before the opening. Opening Racine on 7 June became our way of honouring him and keeping the promise we made, even though emotionally, we were not ready.
Looking back now, Racine carried more than dreams and ambition. It carried grief, love, family history, sacrifice, and unspoken emotions. Opening the restaurant became an act of devotion — continuing despite heartbreak while carrying the people we love through everything we build. But the journey behind Racine was never smooth. The construction process, disagreements, and the pressure of balancing work, family, partnership, and marriage slowly became heavier than we wanted to admit.
Lately, the shift has become impossible to ignore. We realised we need to pause before we lose the meaning behind why Racine existed in the first place.
So for now, we are choosing to pause Racine to return to the source of it all — to rebuild with a clearer mindset, an updated heart, and a deeper understanding of ourselves.
Racine is still open for now, and we would love to welcome you while this chapter is still here.
