Do luxury travel and tradition go hand in hand? Is authenticity a treasure that makes a destination special, and luxury travel an opportunity to get to know the people, customs, and daily life of a region?

If you ask Angela Hughes, an experienced American luxury travel expert and consultant, the answer is yes. It was precisely the desire to experience and capture a piece of Rovinj's authenticity during her visit to our town that brought her to our Spacio Matika, organized by the Rovinj Tourist Board.

There, she was welcomed by our Roberta Silvi Malusà, who showed her how rovinjski fioki are made—a simple pastry that holds countless Rovinj memories in its flavor.💝

🎶 Spacio Matika is known for its cheerful and lively atmosphere, but sometimes Nuove Quattro Colonne, drawing from the rich repertoire of Rovinj’s poetic and musical tradition, choose something that is rarely performed, such as this beautiful night aria (ària da nuòto) “Guarda che notte placida”. With their beauty, àrie da nuòto seem to slow down time, quietly speaking of the rich musical heritage of Rovinj.

🎶 Under the rule of the Venetian Republic for a long time, and later the Kingdom of Italy, Rovinj was strongly connected to Italian culture, which still defines its cultural, and especially musical, heritage today. Present-day Italian Community is the guardian of a rich tradition of folk music, particularly represented by various forms of vocal polyphony: bitinàde, butunàde, àrie da cuntràde, and àrie da nuòto.

🎶 Among the various local forms of vocal polyphony, àrie da nuòto, or “night songs”, represent the most intimate and subtle genre. They carry traces of a distant past, from a time when sacred and secular music were closely interconnected.

Spacio Matika is a place of tradition we cherish, but also of a new one we are just creating.

We would like to thank our favorite married couple, Claudia and Darjan, for whom Spacio Matika was so special that they got married here and recently celebrated their first anniversary.

On that occasion, as a token of gratitude, they gifted us a bottle of wine and started a beautiful new tradition. Here is the content of their message, for which we thank them from the bottom of our hearts:

In Spàcio Matika, an integral part of the Batana Eco-museum, a lecture was held by Prof. Marino Budicin entitled “Batana Eco-museum - Rovinj's Maritime and Fishing Heritage - Commoner of the Sea”, as part of the mentoring program of the TRANS MARIS project (TRANSmitting MARitime Intergenerational Skills for a Sustainable Cultural-Tourism Development Model).

At the beginning, the attendees were welcomed by the institution's director, Nives Giuricin, who thanked Prof. Budicin for his contribution to preserving and promoting Rovinj's maritime heritage. She also presented the TRANS MARIS project, highlighting its importance in transferring maritime knowledge and skills between generations and training young participants through the mentoring program.

Prof. Marino Budicin, founder of the Batana Eco-museum and a skilled expert in the maritime history of Rovinj-Rovigno, delivered an engaging and informative lecture on the development of maritime affairs, fishing, and small shipbuilding—activities that defined the lives of Rovinj locals for centuries. He spoke about the period when Rovinj-Rovigno was the leading maritime and fishing center of Istria, as well as about traditional vessels, among which the batana has been preserved to this day as the most recognizable symbol of the town.

The lecture was attended by mentors and participants of the TRANS MARIS project, as well as numerous citizens who followed the presentation with great interest and had the opportunity to learn a number of fascinating historical facts about the rich maritime heritage of Rovinj-Rovigno and its role in shaping the local community's identity.

⚓ Lecture: The Maritime Heritage of Rovinj-Rovigno at Spacio Matika*

We invite you to a lecture by Prof. Marino Budicin, who will introduce us to the rich maritime heritage of Rovinj-Rovigno, its development throughout history, and the important role it plays in shaping the local community's identity.

The lecture is being held as part of the mentoring program of the project TRANS MARIS – TRANSmitting MARitime Intergenerational Skills for a Sustainable Cultural-Tourism Development Model, which promotes the transfer of maritime knowledge and skills between generations and the valorization of the shared maritime heritage of the Adriatic.

Is there any better proof of how special our Spacio Matika is than the fact that a couple in love chose it for their wedding after their very first visit, and are celebrating their first wedding anniversary right here today?

Claudia and Darjan—a Peruvian woman and an Istrian man—were brought together by Rovinj-Rovigno in an encounter that could easily be the beginning of a romantic movie.

Their shared love for authenticity and tradition led them to a batana boat ride and dinner at the Spacio. The century-old interior and the warm welcome, radiating smiles from generations of Rovinj locals, reminded Claudia of her distant home. It inspired her to say her fateful "I do" to her Darjan—and to Rovinj-Rovigno itself—right here at Spacio Matika.

Before you read their words of gratitude that bring the emotion in these photos to life, we would like to wish them a happy first anniversary. From the bottom of our hearts, we hope their marriage is filled with genuine joy and the preservation of true values—much like our Spacio Matika—and that they continue to celebrate the beauty of their togetherness with song, delicious bites, and their loved ones as often as possible.🌟❣️

Rovinj has given us so much in such a short time. It gave us a home in a magical place, and it is the birthplace of our love story.

Our love for this town led us to celebrate our first anniversary at Spacio Matika, on 25/07 24. From the moment we took the batana ride to Spacio and enjoyed a wonderful dinner while listening to the beautiful bitinadas, we knew this was the place where we wanted to seal our love.

A year later, on 25/07/25, we fulfilled that dream. Surrounded by our family and friends, we dined and celebrated the beginning of our lives together. This dream was entirely orchestrated by Nives, and the wonderful team at Spacio, who took care of every detail from beginning to end. Our gratitude will always remain forever!"
