People are not forced into dangerous sea crossings by the sea itself, but by the absence of safe and regular pathways to protection.

The Aegean is often described as a natural border. Yet there is nothing natural about the risks people face while crossing it.

Whether families are forced onto overcrowded inflatable boats depends on political choices made long before departure: the availability of humanitarian visas, family reunification procedures, resettlement programmes, functioning asylum systems and safe, regular pathways to protection.

For more than a decade, Lesvos Solidarity has welcomed people after arrival, distributed emergency assistance, documented changing realities and accompanied communities long after international attention moved elsewhere.

When safe pathways expand, dangerous crossings decrease.

When they disappear, the sea becomes a place where the consequences of political decisions unfold.

Ensuring safe passage means ensuring that people can access protection without having to risk their lives to reach it.
