Waste Is Gold: A Lesson Beyond the Classroom
Last week, my AP Environmental Science class joined the Waste is Gold tour—and it was nothing short of transformative.
We visited the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP), where we explored how waste is sorted, processed, and turned into valuable resources like compost and recyclables. It was an inspiring example of the circular economy in action—and a wake-up call to rethink our relationship with waste.
This wasn’t just a field trip; it was a real-world encounter with sustainability, innovation, and environmental responsibility. My students were fully engaged, asking critical questions, drawing connections to class content, and seeing how science directly shapes society.
One of the most powerful takeaways? Realizing that waste isn’t just a problem—it’s a potential resource, when managed with intention and creativity.
Huge thanks to the Waste is Gold team and the staff at the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant for such an impactful experience. These kinds of partnerships between education and industry are essential if we are to raise a generation of environmentally conscious leaders.
