Join us on a social initiative in greening Ghana planting trees in our communities and neighborhoods.

Trees act like natural sponges and shields.

1. They soak up water
Tree roots + soil around them absorb rainfall. A single mature tree can take up 100+ gallons of water per day. The soil under a forest absorbs 60x more water than bare soil or pavement.

2. They slow rain down
Leaves and branches catch rain first. Instead of water hitting the ground hard and running off fast, it drips slowly. That “interception” reduces peak flood flows during heavy storms.

3. Roots hold soil together
Root networks create channels in the soil so water can soak in instead of running over the surface. Roots also stop soil erosion. Without trees, soil washes away and clogs rivers/drains, making floods worse.

4. They reduce surface runoff
Pavement = 100% runoff. Grass = 40% runoff. Forest = 10% runoff or less. More trees = less water rushing into streets, drains, and rivers all at once.

5. They release water back slowly
Trees “transpire” - they pull water from soil and release it as v***r. This dries out the ground between rains so the soil has more capacity to absorb the next storm.

One acre of forest can hold ∼1 million gallons of floodwater. Cities with more tree cover have way fewer flash floods than concrete-heavy areas.

Green infrastructure and tree planting is used a lot now for flood control alongside drains.
