Ethiopian Christmas, known as Ganna (or Genna), is celebrated on January 7th, differing from the Western date due to the Julian calendar used by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, aligning with other Orthodox churches. Festivities involve a 43-day fast (Tsome Nebiyat), special church services in traditional white garments like the Netela, communal meals after breaking the fast (featuring injera), coffee ceremonies, and traditional games like field hockey, emphasizing faith, and traditional dance. Join us at Abyssinia to honor this special occasion with authentic Ethiopian dishes, warm hospitality, cultural DANCEs and our signature coffee ceremony.

🔥 Celebrate Meskel – The True Cross ✝️

Meskel, one of the most important Ethiopian Orthodox celebrations, falls this year on Sunday, September 27th. The tradition dates back to 326 AD, when St. Helena, guided by a dream, lit a bonfire whose smoke revealed the site of the True Cross.

The festival unites people through forgiveness and love, with colorful church uniforms and joyful gatherings. 🌸✨
