"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

Our colleague Gill is well known for being a chatterbox – so doing a sponsored silence for ten hours to raise money for Tickled Pink was quite a feat.

Gill, who works in the cash office and has been with Asda for 39 years, said: "I do like to talk, ask anyone! My colleagues said I wouldn't be able to do it... but I did, although it was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do! Although I'm based in the office, I spent some time out on the shop floor and got donations from customers too. Everyone in store knew I was doing it and I'd like to thank everyone who sponsored me."

Gill jointly fundraised with checkouts colleague Andrea, who held a cake sale, and between them raised more than £700 for Tickled Pink which supports Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! She said: "Tickled Pink is such worthy cause. Breast cancer is something that touches everyone. Both my mum, Mary, and mother in law, Joan, have had breast cancer and are now both clear so Tickled Pink is very personal to me. Hopefully one day they will find a cure for breast cancer."

Well done, team!

Well done, team!

Cleaning colleague Robert says he wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for the quick-thinking and skill of his team leader Paul who came to the rescue when he had a heart attack at our Monks Cross store in York.

First-aider Paul performed chest compressions and used the store's defibrillator on Robert after he collapsed in the canteen and fell backwards off his chair, hitting his head on the floor. Home shopping colleague Katelyne had already phoned for an ambulance and relayed instructions and information to Paul from the 999 call handler while he administered first aid. Their colleague Joseph grabbed the store's defibrillator. Another colleague, Sarah, also went for help, while GM team leader Pamela was on hand to support colleagues. Forty-eight-year-old Robert has recovered well and is making a phased return to work after having a pacemaker fitted.

He said: "I can't thank Paul enough, he saved my life. There were no warning signs of a heart attack at all. All I remember was I was sitting in the canteen and reading a holiday brochure and the next thing I was waking up in Leeds General Infirmary. I've no memory of what happened, but I'm grateful to everyone who helped. It's nice to be back to the routine and to see everyone. I feel okay now, I'm just taking things a bit slowly."

Paul said: "I didn't have time to think, the adrenaline just kicked in – it was a life or death moment. In situations like this every second counts. I just went into first aid mode. It was only later when I got home and thought about it that it hit me. We were all so relieved when Robert pulled through as it was touch and go for a while. It's so good to see him back."

Store manager Mick said: "It''s such a pleasure to have Robert back with us – he's very well thought of in the store. We were really worried about him and every single day I had people coming up to me asking how he was. While he was recovering I spoke to his mum regularly and we gave her some gifts for her to take to Robert in hospital – including a photo of everyone in the shop so he had something to smile about while he was laid up. I'm so proud of the team here for what they did on the day, especially Paul – he is literally a lifesaver."
