One of his favourite spots is the Museum Gardens, just a short stroll from the hotel, the different winding paths mean you never have to take the same route twice, and the pretty buildings and historic ruins make it the perfect place to excape the city and stretch your legs!.

York was built as a major military base for Roman legions controlling northern Britain, and the city’s medieval walls still follow the same footprint as the original Roman stone walls surrounding the fortress.

Archaeologists have uncovered Roman baths, roads, temples, coins, mosaics, and even the remains of Roman soldiers beneath the city.

These “Gateway to Roman Fortress” signs mark the exact spots where the gates of Eboracum (the Roman name for York) once stood nearly 2,000 years ago.
