There's a moment most people have here, usually about ten minutes after they've sat down, coat off, boots by the fire, first sip taken, where the whole day just seems to settle a bit.

It's not really about any one thing. It's the stone fireplaces that have been warming this room since the 1600s. It's the beams you have to duck under, worn smooth by centuries of people doing exactly that. It's the bar, carved from an old four-poster bed, which sounds like it shouldn't work and somehow does beautifully. It's the ordnance survey maps covering the walls, tracing the fells outside the ones you've just come down from, and the ones still waiting.

None of it is trying too hard. It's just old, and warm, and built for sitting still in for a while. If you've had a big day on the fells, or you're planning one, we'll have a spot by the fire waiting.

We might have gone slightly overboard with the signage, but the message is the same wherever you look- dogs are genuinely welcome here, not just tolerated. 🐾

Nine out of ten of our rooms are dog-friendly, there's a wash station for muddy paws after a walk, and yes, there's a treat waiting behind the bar too.

As far as we're concerned, a pampered pooch is just another one of our lovely customers.
