"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. πŸŽ€

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. πŸ’—

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

πŸ’— This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.πŸ’•

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

A Rising Stars CIC are running a Summer Camp for two days at the Amelia Quigley Dance school here in Wigan.

They're providing breakfast and lunches, so Asda has helped with bread and fruit. It's a great chance for young people to enjoy healthy exercise and make memorable experiences.

A huge thank you to these six long serving colleagues who have clocked up a combined total of 225 years working for Asda.

Diane is our longest-serving colleague and has been with Asda for 45 years. Linda Marie, Diane and Janet have all been here for 35 years, and Julie, Sue and Tracy have all clocked up 25 years of service. They attended the Big Asda Celebration held at the AJ Bell Stadium. We hope they all had a fantastic day.

Alathia – a newly-qualified midwife – along with with many other midwifes run Early Essentials Wigan.

They have an unmanned trolley in store and make up Moses baskets for vulnerable and desperately in need mums and mums-to-be with clothes and basic supplies to start them off.

Re Doo are an upcycle group. They have a 4 hour session on a Thursday, which anyone can attend. They supply all the pens, paint and glitter, you bring a piece of clothing to upcycle. Many are there due to loneliness, to get them out of the house for a natter.

As a fairly new Asda community champion and having only been in the position a couple of weeks when it was the BBC Children in Need appeal last November I'm so proud of everyone at Asda Wigan helping to raise Β£3,010 for the charity.

Coming in the top 10 stores is a massive achievement. Thanks to Children in Need for the personally written card and certificate and thank you to all our customers and colleagues who supported the appeal.

Well done Ann!
10/03/2026

Well done Ann!

When Ann started working at our Wigan store aged 16 in February 1976, Harold Wilson was Prime Minster, Jaws was a big hit in the cinema and Abba were number one in the charts with Mamma Mia!

Ann said: "When I started working for Asda I never expected I'd still be here 50 years later – It's flown by! I still love my job; I like being part of the team. I've made a lot of friends over the years. You do get customers coming up to you and saying 'are you still here?' but I've no intention of retiring just yet."

Ann started on counters, becoming supervisor and then manager and when pizzas became more popular she helped other stores in the area set up their counters. After working at the old Wigan store for 23 years – and the new one for two – Ann spent 16 years working at our Golborne, Leigh and Walton stores, before returning to Wigan 11 years ago. She now works part-time.

To celebrate her milestone, grocery colleague Ann was presented with gifts from managers and colleagues. An announcement over the Tannoy congratulating Ann was greeted with a rousing cheer. Gareth, the store's ambient manager, said: "Ann is a great servant to the company, from colleague to manager back to colleague. She's a very valued colleague here at Asda Wigan and we are very proud of her achieving this incredible milestone. Here's to the next 50!"

It was a real pleasure to present Amy – founding director of All Ears MHA – with an Asda Foundation grant for Β£1,000.

All Ears was set up in in memory of her school friend Aleysha who took her own life aged just 15.

Amy wanted to helps others so has set up this amazing place. There's rooms for talking and also rooms for throwing paint! It's so relaxed and friendly.

With the Asda Foundation grant she is hoping to help teenagers with special educational needs. It was a joy to see such a young woman doing what she felt so passionate about and giving back to others.

MMA and coach Tom Blackledge and his wife Stella received their Β£1000 Asda Foundation grant. They will be using the money to set up a MMA, mindfulness and nutritional advice for teens in Wigan during the school holidays. This is the first of many plans they have to encourage local teens to improve themselves and enjoy it at the same time. Ataraxia is based in an old church in Ince, Wigan. They will be using the fantastic facilities they have at the academy.
