We are a Post-16 Training Centre opening in September 2026 incorporating on site work experience to develop employability skills for young adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Our ethos is to use as many locally sourced ingredients as possible to create delicious home made, chargrilled burgers in a relaxed atmosphere alongside excellent customer service. We are passionate

about the local area and are proud members of both Dorset Food and Drink and Taste of The West. We are thrilled to have achieved a Gold Award two years running from Taste of The West and named as South West Cafe of the year in 2013. We are happy to welcome customers for coffees, teas, desserts and snacks as well as the full burger experience! We are licensed and serve a range of wines, local ales and ciders etc as well as soft drinks. We always have a number of meal deal special offers available alongside a full children's menu. Please do book in advance if possible for evenings and large parties as we do get busy.

It’s been an exciting week for us here at SAW and we’ve got lots up to update you on!

As you can hopefully see from the photos below, our internal works are all complete and we’re now working in each room to get everything ready for our September starting date.

We had our first group of learners in the Centre yesterday and we spent time working together and making plans for our official start date on 3 September. We spent time with our partners at Tumbledown Farm, seeing the fantastic outdoor space that we will be working on. We continue to meet with other young people to see if SAW might be an option for them for this academic year and it’s been lovely to discuss their plans for the future.

Sea-SAW, our not-for-profit community cafe and shop has recruited its first volunteers to support our young people with the daily running of them both and we can’t wait to start working together! Also our huge thanks have to go to the team at The National Lottery Community Fund. We have received some funding from them which will support our Sea-SAW Growing Together Project, which will help us to create a fantastic community space for everyone in our local community to access and enjoy!

As always please send us a message here or visit our website for further information:

🫵 WE NEED YOU! 🫵

Are you looking to learn new skills, meet people and make a real difference in our community? If the answer is yes we may just have the role for you!

As part of their education with us our young people will be managing the day-to-day running of our not-for-profit community café and shop Sea-SAW.

Opening in October this year, Sea-SAW will be open during the week selling homemade brunches and lunches, a wide selection of drinks, handmade products, fresh produce from Tumbledown Farm and Weymouth Football Club merchandise among many other amazing items! Sea-SAW will also host our monthly weekend DBCo nights where you will be able to get your long-awaited burger fix!

We are therefore looking for a team of volunteers to support our students in the running of our community café and shop to raise as much money as we can to help the local SEND community.

We will provide a uniform top, food while on shift and up to two free DBCo Burger Night visits (depending on hours worked) and all volunteers will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check.

Our volunteer roles are live on the Volunteer Centre Dorset website, please visit their website for more information and to register your interest:

We hope to see you soon!

👀 PARTNER EMPLOYER IN FOCUS 👀
⚽️WEYMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB ⚽️

We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to one of our fantastic partner employers here at Skills Ability Weymouth - Weymouth Football Club!

Founded in 1890 and known as "The Terras," the club plays at the Bob Lucas Stadium, just under two miles away from our Centre in King Street enabling us to practice various methods of travel for our journey there and back.

The club have a fantastic team both on and off the pitch and Ralph (Chairman), Kate (General Manager) and Claire (Volunteer Manager) have some brilliant opportunities lined up for us to start in September and we can’t wait to get stuck in! With tasks in areas such as creative industries, horticulture, marketing and construction - we’re certainly going to be busy!

The new season kicks off at 3pm on Saturday 8 August with an all-important local derby match against Dorchester. Some of the team will be volunteering at the match so please stop and say hello if you see us!

For more information about the work we will be doing with our local employer partners please visit our webpage:

👀 VISITING US AT SAW 👀

Thank you to all of you who came in and to see us at our Open Event last week. It was great to see so many people and discuss with you how we could work together at Skills Ability Weymouth.

We appreciate how difficult it can be at events like those - coming in to somewhere different and seeing lots of new people. To make things easier we are therefore offering timeslots every week where you can book in with Ross or myself to have an individual visit to us including a tour of our brand new facilities and discussions on what we do at SAW and whether it would suit you.

‼️ OPEN EVENT TOMORROW ‼️

The rooms have been tidied, the floors have been mopped and the biscuits have been bought - that must mean that we’re all ready for our Open Evening tomorrow!

If you’re a young person with an EHCP, or a parent / carer exploring options for this coming September, we’d love to see you!

See you tomorrow,

Just a quick update for you all. We continue to be busy at SAW with new electrics, fire boarding and fire doors going in alongside lots of decorating. If you’re passing us you’ll hear lots of banging, crashing and dance tunes from the site radio!
