There’s nothing quite like watching the starling murmurations across the Somerset Levels as the sun goes down 🌅✨
Every late afternoon through autumn and winter, tens of thousands of starlings gather in the sky, swirling together in massive, fluid clouds before dropping down into the reedbeds to roost for the night 🌾🪶 (Think synchronized swimming, but with wings... and without the nose clips! 🏊♂️🏼)
It’s completely mesmerising to watch—and listen to—no matter how many times you’ve seen it 📸👀 Whether you’re a keen birdwatcher, a photographer, or just fancy escaping the daily grind for a couple of days of fresh air, it is well worth catching while they’re here 🌬️🥾
If you’re planning a trip to see the show, we’re in prime position right in the heart of the reserves here at Double-Gate Farm in Godney 🚜🏡
Taking a steady drive down the local lanes, we’re just minutes away from all the main roosting hotspots:
📍 RSPB Ham Wall: 10–15 mins
📍 Avalon Marshes Centre: 15 mins
📍 Westhay Moor: 8–10 mins
📍 Catcott Nature Reserve: 15–20 mins
After a chilly hour or two standing out in the hides (or defrosting your fingers!), head straight back to warm up, kick off your boots, and put your feet up. ☕🔥 Why not pre-book a delicious homemade cream tea—or a cheese scone savoury tea 🧀🫖—to be waiting in your room when you get back?
Rooms fill up fast while our feathered friends are in town (October through February), so if you're thinking of visiting, do get booked in early! 🗓️💨
🛏️ Single-night stays: Available early/mid-week
