Well, we are now officially in a drought.. and don’t we know it! We all need to do a bit of a rain dance 💃🏼 to get the grass growing again and the land can have a bit of a drink.

But plenty of wildlife here on the farm- we have swallows that visit us every year. This year they made their nest in the stable and had 4 chicks! They have now fledged and swooping around the yard practicing their flying skills and catching flys. You may have seen them!

A few weeks ago, the boys and I decided to put wildlife water stations in various spots around the farm. So the wildlife could have a drink, being as there is no ground water around at the moment. It has been their job to top them up every day.

The last photo is of a Cinnabar Moth Caterpillar… these eat and feed on ragwort almost exclusively. Whilst Ragwort is poisonous if cut and dried for horses and livestock, whilst living; it is an important part of the ecosystem for these moths (the red and black day flying moths.) Whilst we don’t have any ragwort in our livestock fields, we have a plant in our unmown grassy area by the shed, what was ‘No Mow May’ and these moths are thriving on it.

All part of the biodiversity here on the farm and all working together

🧀 Cheese of the week 😎

Gert Lush (or "very lovely" to us folks outside of Somerset!) is Feltham's Farm’s take on Camembert… it has won multiple awards, including Gold at the Artisan Cheese Awards and two Star at the Great Taste Awards! Feltham Farm is an organic farm in the West Country ran by Marcus and Penny and a non traditional cheese maker 💛

Unlike most camemberts, the white rind is soft, thin and cuts beautifully, revealing a gorgeously soft cheese inside. This is a real crowd pleaser and it’s in the shed now 🐄😎 Perfect with crusty bread and watching the footy tonight!

Come on England!!!🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 ❤️🤍❤️🤍

The last time we had 30+ degree heat a couple of weeks ago 🔥😎☀️🥵

Making sure the girls keep cool in the yard waiting to be milked… a breeze and a walk through the water mister!! Luxury living for our girls… only the best will do 🐄💁🏻‍♀️ Keeping your milk cool 🧊🥛😁

There’s one thing that Ted does 100% and that is to look after his herd 🤎🤍

Phew… it’s is going is scorchio this week!! ☀️

Luckily we start milking the cows at 05.15 in a morning so a bit cooler- although we are already at about 18-20 degrees.
The calves have already had their breakfasts and some nice clean fresh straw beds this morning too, to beat the heat.

The girls are currently making their way back to the fields to graze; surrounded by trees and plenty of shade and water troughs. They will also have access to come back into their sheds should they wish to lie in their beds in the shade 🐄

Welfare and happy cows is so important to us 🤎🤍 and of course making sure the whole team here stay cool and hydrated 🧊 here on the farm!

You may have noticed that we were doing ‘No Mow May’ in part of our old orchard paddock next to the shed. It’s been wonderful to see the pollinators buzzing around the dandelions, buttercups, clover and vetch that have bloomed whilst we haven’t cut it.

In the early morning sunshine, it has been buzzing with all different insects and invertebrates. What was also wonderful to see was the Goldfinches- who we hadn’t had visit that part before and collecting seeds off the plants. Amazing!

We also had blue tit’s fledge from our nest box in our garden and the parents would bring back food for them from the shorter grassier areas of the old orchard.

Just goes to show, nature is wonderful and it’s been lovely to see the biodiversity we have here. So much so… I think we will keep a remaining patch of unmowed area from now on. After all, the countryside is somewhat dwindling and they need all the help they can get ###
