⭐ FIVE STARS! AGAIN! ⭐

Well, that's another unannounced visit from Environmental Health done and dusted, and I'm absolutely delighted to say Heather's Café has retained its 5-star food hygiene rating! 💚

Two years in, a lot more experience under my belt, and still running this little ship to the highest standards.

I'm incredibly proud of this one. A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes (usually involving me, a mop and some questionable language), so it's lovely to have that recognised.

Five stars, another year, same slightly unhinged woman behind the counter. 🌿💚

🍻 VAT’S THE PROBLEM — AND WE NEED YOUR HELP 🍻

Before anyone thinks this is a political post… it isn’t. ❤️

This is about hospitality. It’s about our pubs, our restaurants, our cafés and every venue working hard to keep our communities alive.

Here at The Dolphin, we are leaseholders. That means we are responsible for every single bill that comes through the door — wages, energy, stock, repairs, maintenance, insurance, rent… the list goes on.

And then there’s VAT.

Every quarter, we work incredibly hard to keep our margins as sensible as possible, keep prices fair for our customers and make sure we can continue employing our brilliant team.

Then the VAT bill lands. 😩

And honestly? It wipes us out.

We’re not asking for handouts. We’re asking for a tax system that gives hospitality businesses a bit more breathing space to actually invest, employ, maintain our buildings, support local causes and give something back to the communities we are part of.

Because when you spend your money in your local pub, that money doesn’t just disappear into a till.

It pays our staff.
It goes to local suppliers.
It supports tradespeople.
It helps us put on events.
It helps us sponsor local teams and support charities.
It helps us keep our doors open and our community together.

Imagine what we could do if, instead of handing such a huge chunk over in VAT every quarter, we could put more of that money back into our businesses and our communities.

Even a VAT reduction for six months of the year would make a huge difference.

For the full 12 months? That could be transformational.

The national campaign is calling for hospitality VAT to come down from 20% to 10%. It already has more than 150,000 signatures and is supported by hospitality organisations across the industry. (Vat’s the Problem⁠)

So whether you drink in The Dolly, grab a coffee somewhere else, eat out, stay in a hotel, go to a gig or simply want to see your local high street continue to thrive…

It’s not about party politics.

It’s about making sure the hospitality venues you love can survive, employ people, invest, support their communities and keep doing what they do best.

🍂 A little Tuesday update from Heather’s Café! 🍰☕

Well, it’s shaping up to be a rather lovely (and busy!) week here at Heather’s, so I thought I’d give you all a little update on what’s happening!

First things first… THE CAKES! 🤤
I’ve been busy baking away, and we’ve got an absolutely gorgeous selection for you this week, including:
🍪 Biscoff Cookie Bars
🍋 Lemon Brownies
🍫 Salted Caramel Millionaire’s Brownies
💕 Jammy Dodger Blondies
🍋 Lemon Drizzle
🍯 Daim Bar Millionaire’s Shortbread

🍰 Our beautiful Toffee Loaf (which has been absolutely flying out!)
🍒 And, because apparently we’re doing fruit cake now… FRUIT CAKE! 😂

Tomorrow, Wednesday 23rd September, we’ll be welcoming the lovely Tracy from Blended Wellbeing for a meet and greet. 💚
If you’ve been curious about what Blended Wellbeing is all about, fancy meeting Tracy, or simply want to pop in for a cuppa and a chat, do come along! There’ll be plenty of cake and a warm welcome waiting for you.

Then on Sunday 27th September, we have our September Grief Circle. 🕊️
I think it’s fair to say that life has felt rather heavy for a lot of people lately. Between the chaos of the summer holidays, settling back into routines, and all the personal challenges that so many in our little community have been navigating, sometimes we just need somewhere to sit, take a moment and be amongst familiar faces.
Whether you’re navigating bereavement, struggling with a difficult chapter of life, or simply feeling the weight of everything at the moment, you’re very welcome to join us.
There’ll be cake, cuppas, conversation and absolutely no pressure to be anything other than yourself.

I’m a little late announcing it, but on 16th September, Heather’s Café officially celebrated its second birthday!
Two whole years of coffee, cake, chaos, laughter, community and an extraordinary amount of washing up. 😂

Thank you to every single one of you who has supported us, popped in for a coffee, bought a slice of cake, shared a post, or simply made this little café feel like the wonderful place it is.
Here’s to year three, to more cake, more lovely people and whatever adventures lie ahead! 🥂

Amisha creates such a lovely, welcoming space for anyone navigating grief, loss or life's many changes. Whether you fancy a chat, need a listening ear, or simply want to sit amongst people who understand, you're very welcome.

As the seasons change and the evenings draw in, it's a lovely opportunity to come together, connect and know you're not alone.

Quick little lunchtime closure! ❤️

I’ve just had to collect Flo from school as she is, apparently, terribly unwell… so terribly unwell, in fact, that since arriving at the café she’s managed three bowls of ice cream, a jacket potato, some brownie and two Fruit Shoots. 😂

She’s absolutely fine, but she hasn’t been quite herself since yesterday and it feels a bit unfair making her hang around here until 4:30 when she could have a proper break at home.

So we’re going to close for lunch, head home for a little reset, and reopen at 2pm.

So sorry for the faff and thank you, as always, for bearing with the realities of running a café around small people! 💚

🎈 A very happy 12th birthday to Alfie! 🎈

A little while ago, Alfie came into Heather’s and tried a slice of our Cherry Bakewell Cookie Pie… and apparently it was a BIG hit. 😂❤️

So when his mum got in touch and asked if I could make him a whole one as a surprise for his 12th birthday, of course the answer was yes.

And here she is — one enormous Cherry Bakewell Cookie Pie, made especially for the birthday boy. 🥰🍒

It’s always lovely making cakes and treats for people, but there’s something particularly special about knowing exactly who it’s going to and why.

Happy birthday, Alfie. I hope you have the loveliest day and absolutely demolish your cookie pie. 😂❤️

💜 ☕️ Blended Wellbeing ladies are already familiar faces around Heather’s, and I’m so pleased that we’re going to be a bit more of a regular haunt for them over the coming months. 🥰

Tracy will be here next Wednesday 23rd September, 11–12:30, for a really relaxed little meet & greet.

So if you’ve seen me sharing Blended Wellbeing recently, or you’ve spotted the ladies having one of their catch-ups here and wondered what it’s all about, this is the perfect chance to pop in, grab a coffee and have a chat with Tracy.

Absolutely no pressure and nothing formal — just a warm welcome, a cuppa and a chance to find out more about a genuinely lovely group doing a really lovely thing. 💜

And apparently if nobody turns up Tracy has threatened to sit and do admin for an hour and a half, which frankly sounds awful, so please come and save her. 😂

Really happy for Heather’s to be a little hub for this wonderful bunch. 💚☕️

And because choosing is half the fun, ANY 3 toppings are included in the price.

We’re talking strawberries, blueberries, whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, chocolate, white chocolate, salted caramel, Biscoff, honeycomb, M&Ms, Biscoff crumb, sprinkles… basically, make good choices or make absolutely appalling ones. I support both.
