Design is deeply associated with creating a better way of life – for humans. Yet we exist alongside billions of animals, plants and other living beings.

Published by the Design Museum, More Than Human brings together a new generation of designers, architects and artists exploring how to reorient their practices for the flourishing of other species.

More Than Human is among the most exciting ideas, reshaping diverse fields from academia to art and urban design. Some of our favourite doers and makers have touched on its insights in one way or another, and The Design Museum’s book on the topic is a thrilling addition to the discourse.

On Tuesday, Alison spoke at University of Western Australia in Perth as part of the Ross K Chisholm Forum, which celebrates the legacy of Perth architect Ross Chisholm.

Now, she’s travelled to Brisbane to deliver a keynote address at this year’s AIA conference and also open a screening of AHEC’s Forested Future later today. The documentary invites architects to consider how responsibly sourced timber and long-term stewardship can help address today's environmental challenges.

The screening will be followed by drinks and informal conversation with Alison and Rod Wiles from the American Hardwood Export Council.

BEAM Hertford is shortlisted for the Entertainment & Performance Spaces category at this year's The World of Interiors Awards 2026, a prestigious global competition that celebrates the best in interior design.

BEAM by Bennetts Associates with interiors by is a new all-day multi-arts hub that demonstrates the transformative potential of architectural reuse, providing a renewed centre for community life. Rather than demolishing the 1970s Hertford Theatre, the project retains the original structure and wraps it in a striking new hexagonal brick form, creating a multi-functional venue for cinema, performance and events. An exemplar of contemporary civic retrofit and a model of how cultural hubs can act as standard-bearers for the climate challenge.

Congratulations to everyone involved, it truly was a team effort. The pedestrianisation of Oxford Street was at least a decade in the making. And in a fantastic feature by the The Guardian’s dan hancox, East shared their insights and rationale behind the visionary transformation of London’s most famous street.

London-based architecture, landscape and urban design practice East leads the team which includes J&L Gibbons, Gehl - Making Cities for People, Publica, and .

Archie Bashford, Landscape associate, East, is quoted discussing how “amazing and transgressive” shutting the street will be, meaning in a few weeks visitors will be able to look up at Oxford Street’s glittering Christmas lights without worrying about traffic.

The rich and chequered history of Oxford Street is matched by its importance to London today – as Dan notes, more than 500,000 people visit every day, equivalent to the population of Edinburgh, and it generates 5% of London’s economic output.

It was the honour of a lifetime for team Zetteler to work with East on this project, supporting the practice to share its vision and mission during such a pivotal moment in its history.

A jacket that works with the seated position of a wheelchair? Buttons and zips that accommodate reduced grip strength? A dress with space for a medical device? Seems obvious, right?!

Indigenous communities are essential to preserving the world’s forests. That’s a key argument made by AHEC Europe, which is explored in its project Stewards of the Forest.

The largest Indian reservation east of the Mississippi, covering 94,000 hectares, is more than 90% covered in maple and aspen, birch and hemlock, red oak and white pine, ash and basswood, set in a wider landscape of fields west of Lake Michigan.

Seen from space, it is a giant green mass surrounded by farmland. While 19th-century European settlers almost entirely cleared the landscape of trees, the Menominee, who gained legal control of land along the Wolf River in southern Wisconsin in the 1850s, remained true to their goal of maintaining their forest.

This recent set of photography by Petr Krejci shows the foresters in action.

In the latest print issue of Disegno, Seetal Solanki pens a brilliant essay about how ' is a neighbourhood-scale experiment in how communities might shape, own and govern the places and resources on which everyday life depends.' The important distinction is that land, development and collective life should be organised with neighbourhoods, not just for them.

Seetal continues, writing that for CIVIC SQUARE founder Imandeep Kaur, being a child of immigrants is not simply a matter of feeling divided between two settled worlds. Instead, she calls it a "fascinating intersection". "We don’t have the same struggles our parents did," she tells me, "but we’re not so many generations away from knowing the stories that got them here." Her generation, she suggests, carries "some of the struggles and all of the possibilities".

Opening tomorrow, CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF’s exhibition Building The Existing City takes place in Berlin from 22 October until 3 December 2026.

For six weeks, Aedes will become an open, live studio where CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF will develop new proposals for four overlooked sites in Berlin, identified through an open call. The exhibition will not just present finished work, but will turn the gallery into a place of architectural production, opening up the design process as it unfolds.

In parallel, 20 of the practice’s projects will be showcased through four core themes – PLAY, LIVE, ACTIVATE, and ADAPT – exploring how architecture can strengthen public life and existing neighbourhoods.

The Future is Human Made: Hands, Work, Power by QEST is a new annual symposium exploring how craft skills can shape the future of work, developed in collaboration with journalist and editor Debika Ray.

As part of the inaugural event, which brought together visionary thinkers to explore the role of human skills, joined industrial designer Jay Osgerby in a conversation chaired by .

Alison discussed the essential and underappreciated role skilled craftspeople play in the making of things we consider 'machine manufactured', such as the metal panelling of train carriages. She described the skilled masonry required for the prefabricated panels at Cadence, Alison Brooks Architects’s landmark mixed-use tower close by in King's Cross, and her home, the recently completed Oculus House, where handmade American black cherry glulam roof beams take centre stage.

The symposium was a great opportunity to hear from makers working across a range of disciplines, and their hopes for the future of craft. Thanks to the organisers, speakers and everyone who came along.
