The route from Ilkley to Bolton Abbey is a favourite for local and visiting cyclists.

Follow the River Wharfe from Ilkley, past the old packhorse bridge and the golf course. Views of the river and Ilkley Moor reward you as you make your way to Bolton Abbey.

There are many cafés along the way, or enjoy a coffee and cake at The Cavendish Pavilion by the river before returning to Ilkley.

Did you know Charlotte Brontë visited Bolton Abbey?

We know this through the reminiscences of fellow writer Ellen Nussey, and from Charlotte’s painting of the ruins, which currently hangs in the Parsonage Museum.

From this picture we can see that the ruins remain largely unchanged from when the Brontë sisters (Charlotte, Emily, Anne, and Branwell) visited in 1833.

Stop for a look around the Grade I St Wilfrid’s Church that dates back to the 16th century.
