As you've probably guessed, going out to write up a new Indian restaurant or to redo somewhere we haven't visited in a while, really gets our tails up.
This time, we chose the multi award winning,

Dehli 6, 150 Ocean Road, in South Shields.

But did it shine, or did it flop like an old poppadom?!

The Venue.
As you expect the restaurant, has a nice layout, nicely furnished and was very welcoming.

The Staff
Faultless to a 'T'. Great service without being overly attentive.

The Menu
An Indian menu with a twist. Dishes listed as streetfood originating from all over India and surrounding cultures, the menu was a damn good read.
We hardly knew where to start, it was a breath of fresh air to behold.

The Food
Let me say just this. In all my years as a chef and as a Critic, I have never tasted food from anywhere as good as this.
Eating at Delhi 6 was like a spiritual awakening.

The Price
The bill was a bit more than you'd expect to pay than anywhere else, give or take a quid or three. At around £50 for 2 eating 3 courses and a couple of alcoholic drinks thrown in, it was WELL worth it.

On top of all that, Dehli 6 deliver too.
We can't wait to go back!!

Overall
For the second time only in 17 years, and the first ever awarded to an Indian restaurant, we are honoured to give Dehli 6 a rock solid...

Maybe the business will responde after all.

Imagine you pay £21 for a Sunday Dinner, expecting your takeout dinner to be top class and then this turns up…

Katie Lou from Stockton ordered this £21 dinner from The Hope and Union in Stockton via UberEats and was shocked to open her tray and find this.

Katie said in a post on social media

“So as you all know I got a dinner delivered earlier from Hope and Union .. I rang them up and they told me to send a photo of the food and my mobile number so I did, they took an hour to respond but because I said I would go to social media about it, so they were quick to respond by telling me to go ahead, I've also been barred from the pub and blocked from there page all because i wanted my money back from this they call a Sunday dinner. They are meant to be top 30 best UK pubs for Sunday dinner yet this dinner I got today is nothing like any of there photos on their social media!! Maybe if they were abit more understanding in the messages I wouldn't have to write this post now”

Hope and Union have yet to respond to this.

Star of India, Ocean Road, South Shields.
So I've finally got round to visiting the Star of India and...was it worth it?!?
Read on.

The Venue
The restaurant on the east end of Ocean Road, this place doesn't stand out anymore than any other restaurant on that strip. At least not until you go inside.
A warm, inviting, clean and nicely laid out.

The Staff
Great staff very friendly and very helpful no matter how fussy or challenging the customer. However they need to be better at asking what you'd like to drink and waiting for your response.

The Menu
A traditional mix of dishes from different regions of India. Not hugely different to other nearby restaurants but hardly any surprise that a couple of restaurants on Ocean Road actually use the same chef.

The Food
Taking a bit longer for your food to come but only because it's cooked fresh.
What a treat!!
The food here is totally beaut!!

The Price
Another great surprise, this restaurant on average is around £10 per person CHEAPER than some rivals nearby. Nice!!

Overall
For an Indian night eating out you absolutely HAVE to get yourself down to Star of India.
Lovely restaurant, with lovely staff and fantastic food at a very affordable price.

As you know, I'm always fair and always keen to write up a new place to eat on my travels.
Sometimes you come across a place that needs a bit of real truth.
Not the sort of truth that wrecks businesses. That's not me. However, that said, this place needs to learn how to fix what has clearly gone wrong.

The Location
Cornwall. Gorgeous as always. The pub is little out of the way but do-able.

The building
A beautiful 18th Century building loaded with character.
Smart and a bit rustic. Perfect.

The Menu
Sunday lunch on today being a Sunday. Great choices for the carnivores and the vegetarians. Vegan...I'm not certain about.

The Staff
Initially very nice, attentive and knowledgeable there was a moment of disbelieving pride when we sent back a lemon cheesecake....TBC
On the hole good folk.

The Food
Here's where things went of the rails a tad.
We ordered roast beef. The plates looked great and the topside was cooked perfectly.
The diamond tipped roast potatoes must have been sat under hotplate lights for hours. Bone dry and rock hard.
My roast beef was in the centre of my plate sitting atop the hidden veg medley of untrimmed green beans, a hint of cauliflower cheese and very overcooked cabbage. Carrots and leak were cooked perfectly and the gravy was very good.
My spuds were pointed out to a young waitress...I was not the only person to notice that the spuds were a risk to any dental plan.

Puds
The sticky toffee pudding and ice cream I could not fault it was very good. However, tasting my colleagues lemon cheesecake, the aftertaste was one of something off, I could not put my finger on.
It was almost chemical in taste, And really was quite bad.
This was sent back and I requested that someone from the kitchen taste it. No one tasted it.
The front of house lady Simply stated that we were the first ones to mention anything about it!!

Nothing further said on the subject the pud was removed from the bill.

Overall
Not great. Flavours were spot on but textures and a kitchen sending out dishes without tasting is a cardinal sin.
A lovely place on a top setting.

Epilogue
With a few tweaks this place can knock out wonderful food but they need a chef that occasionally tastes food going out of the kitchen.
It's easy to let standards take a dip.
