"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

I was very privileged to be invited to the Tickled Pink event in Parliament, celebrating 30 years and over £100 million in fundraising for partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!

It was an amazing event talking to MPs and spreading the word of the importance of early diagnosis. Such a fantastic afternoon.

Little Frankie loves it when the family's Asda orders are delivered and always dresses in a hi-vis jacket to help, so when delivery driver Steve found out it was going to be his sixth birthday he organised a special VIP tour of our Telford store for him.

Frankie's mum Amelia said: "He's not stopped talking about it – he had the best time. All the colleagues went above and beyond for him and were just lovely. We can't thank them enough. The delivery drivers we have are so good with Frankie. He's got speech and sound processing disorder and they are all so patient with him. Steve's his favourite though and he's let him sit in the van. He loved it when he brought Frankie and his eight-year-old brother, Albie, an Asda cap each.

"We lived in Poole before coming to Telford and the Asda drivers there were lovely to Frankie too, always making sure they listened and gave Frankie the chance to talk to them. Frankie's got all the Asda toys at home and he's now got an Asda shirt and name badge. He wears them when he takes the shopping to the kitchen for me. While other children may want to be an astronaut or a doctor when they grow up, Frankie wants to be an Asda delivery driver!"

Steve said: "Frankie is such a lovely, polite little boy. He always shakes my hand and he's even saluted me before. He's talked about me at school assembly too and when I heard that I was just blown away. He loved his visit to the store and when I saw the photos of how happy he was it brought a tear to my eyes. He absolutely loved it and gave me a big hug."

The amazing Telford charity Arty Party were delighted to receive their Better Together Fund Asda Foundation grant for £600.

The money will be used to help towards the costs of arts materials for these amazing people. I had the pleasure of visiting a clay and sculpture group in which they welcomed me with open arms. They are such an amazing bunch, caring and supporting each other to express themselves through arts, stage and dance. They assisted me in making my first ever thumb pot! Thank you so much for having me visit, see you all again soon!
