On November 30th 2010, Ani suffered a stroke. As a result the restaurant was closed for over two months and only reopened in February 2011. Ani has made very good progress, so we have decided to extend our opening times to four nights a week (Wed-Sat). Ani would like to thank all her customers for their good wishes and continuing support.

As I mentioned in my last post, we had a lot of groups at the start of November, and that momentum has continued right into December. Already this month we’ve welcomed two more groups, with another booked for December 20th — which will be our final day at Garuda before we close for the holidays. We’ll reopen on Friday, January 2nd.

A huge thank you to everyone for your support. Thanks to you, Garuda is heading into its 26th year — something we’re truly grateful for.

With love and appreciation,
Ani, Peter, Gareth, and Genet

October was another fantastic month, with lots of groups visiting—and November is off to the same great start!
We’ve had many birthday celebrations already, and bookings are coming in fast. In fact, Garuda is often full, and we already have group reservations for November 21st, November 28th, and even December 20th.

So if you're planning to come with a group, it's a good idea to book early.
We also kindly ask groups to pre-order when possible—it really helps us ensure your chosen dishes are available on the night.

As always, we’ve included a few photos below.

Love,
Peter & Ani ###

So now it’s October, and September was a very good month at the Garuda. We had lots of group bookings, including a 60th birthday party where the guests had the entire restaurant to themselves on a Saturday night. We’re hoping October will be just as successful as the past two months.

Toward the end of September, Ani and I spent two nights at the King Arthur Hotel with my sister Pam, my niece, my nephew, and his wife. Pam and Ani had birthdays one after the other, so we celebrated both together. It was a lovely time—beautiful sunshine, delicious food, and of course, we couldn’t miss a visit to Rhossili.

As usual, we took a few photos.

August was quite good, and since September we've had nearly full houses every night. It’s always a bit sad having to tell people who phone up on the night that we’re full—and the same goes for those who walk in, only to hear that we can’t take them.

We’ve had quite a few groups lately—mostly in sizes of 6 to 8, and even one group of 10. It looks like this week we’ll have another big group, and later, at the end of September, we’re expecting a party of 20 for a 60th birthday celebration.

I’ve had lots of photos recently, which we love to share.

July is usually a quieter month compared to others, often due to the hot weather and many people taking holidays.

We're sorry we had to close on July 5th, but it was for a very special occasion—our great-niece’s wedding. It was a beautiful day, and they had taken over the Morgan Hotel for the celebration.

As I mentioned, the first part of July was fairly quiet, but things picked up nicely in the last two weeks with a few lovely groups visiting. As always, we’ve captured lots of moments—plenty of photos to share!

Lots of love,

We finally returned from Indonesia on June 15th, but didn’t reopen until the 19th. It was lovely to welcome people back to Garuda again. The first few days felt a little strange—after all, Ani hadn’t cooked for an entire month! But things are back to normal now.

That said, we’ll be closing again on Saturday, July 5th. We're heading to my niece’s wedding at the Morgan Hotel, and we hope you’ll understand the reason for this short break.

No photos this time—but who knows, we might share a few from the wedding next time! 😋

Lots of love,
Peter & Ani ###

We’ve now left Pekanbaru and are back in Cilegon. Along the way, we spent some time in Anyer, enjoying the beaches and discovering a great new place to eat. A few days later, we returned to Jakarta to catch a flight to Singapore, where we stayed for two days before heading back to the UK.

Our hotel, the Shangri-La, was familiar—it’s where we stayed a few years ago. Singapore itself remains as impressive as ever: immaculately clean, with stunning hotels and an undeniable vibrancy. Tonight is our final evening here before flying with Singapore Airlines, though we’re not exactly looking forward to the 13-hour journey to London Heathrow. Exhaustion will likely catch up with us, especially with another four-hour coach ride to Wales.

Still, this trip has been wonderful, and seeing Ani’s family again was truly special. Now, our thoughts turn back to the Garuda, hoping people will want to visit us again. Meanwhile, Gareth and Genet have been off on their own adventure—this time in Ethiopia, where Genet is from.

As always, we’ve taken plenty of photos.

Much love,
Peter & Ani ###

As I mentioned before, we are going to the city of Pekanbaru in Sumatra—though not staying in the city itself. Ani’s extended family lives in a village, and we will be staying there for two weeks before heading back to Java.

We’ve now been here for a week, and it’s been wonderful to see everyone again. Every day it’s 33 degrees, so you can imagine what that’s like! But you do sort of get used to it eventually.

We have another week here before returning to Java. Here are some photos from Sumatra.

Lots of love,
Peter & Ani xx

After a 15-hour flight with Singapore Airlines, we finally arrived in Jakarta. There, we met Ani’s sister-in-law and her daughter, Dinda. From Jakarta, it took another two hours to reach our house in Cilegon, a town in the Anyar area, known for its beautiful beaches. This is also where the volcano Baby Krakatoa still stands. It has erupted a few times, though none have been too devastating.

We are staying in Cilegon for six days, and after that, we will be traveling to Pekanbaru in Sumatra.

Attached photos as usual x

We just want to thank everyone who has come to the Garuda during the first part of May. As I mentioned before, Ani and I are going to Indonesia for a month. We’re sorry for any inconvenience, but it’s important for Ani to visit her family—especially her two brothers, who are getting older.

We’ll be leaving from Heathrow and flying with Singapore Airlines. It will take about 12 hours to reach Singapore, then we’ll rush to catch our next flight to Jakarta (now 30 million people there!)—another 3 hours. Fortunately, we’ll be picked up, and after another 4 hours by car, we’ll arrive in Cilegon, south of Jakarta.

We’ll stay there for a while, then fly to Sumatra to visit the larger family living in Pekanbaru. We’ll be there for 2 weeks, then head back to Java.

I’ll try to keep you updated, but it’s not always easy to get Wi-Fi. I’ll do my best—even if it means going to Starbucks!

We look forward to seeing you when we reopen on Thursday, June 19th. As usual, here are some photos from the Garuda and from VE Day.

Love,
Peter & Ani
