"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

We we were thrilled to go along to the Great North Run in Newcastle and South Shields to support our local charity partners with volunteering efforts and donations.

I volunteered with The Bradley Lowery Foundation to help them bring the cheer to the running children on the Saturday with the Jr Run and adults on Sunday with the Great North Run.

It's wonderful to see so many charities and our partners such as Love Amelia, St Benedict's Hospice and Guide Dogs for the Blind (who also received donations for the Great North Run) as well Breast Cancer Now, all together raising money for wonderful causes and having a great day out.

We said goodbye to our store manager Terry, who has helped improve the store in so many ways, from helping out on the shop floor, taking part in events, to listening to colleague and customer feedback and putting a focus back on community again.

We know Terry is going to do great things at his new store and everyone at Sunderland wishes him all the best. Thank you Terry!

We are very pleased to announced we awarded Keep Active CIC with a £1000 grant on behalf of the ASDA Foundation.

Keep Active provides so much for our local community in Sunderland with children enjoying plenty of fun activities thanks to the wonderful staff and coaches at Keep Active.

The money will go towards new equipment, improvements on site as well ensuring every child can enjoy their summer holiday regardless of their circumstances, and after visiting the site we are sure we will continue to support this fantastic part of our community!

We went along to the Colour Run activity day at Thompson Park organised by the Southwick Neighbourhood Youth Project.

We provided some free fruit and water to children taking part to help promote healthy eating and give them some much needed energy after such an active day. Not only that but there was also a range of other activities to do there such as making their own plant seed beds to take home, colouring in and spin the wheel. We hope to further support events such as this working with our community to promote positive active fun.

As part of our spring clean campaign colleagues offered to help with a litter pick and gardening work at Backhouse Park!

We collected around five bags of rubbish and assisted in the clearing of a new path in the park as well as creating some new flowerbeds and planting seeds for the public to enjoy in the summer!

We've recently had two groups come into our Sunderland store – Southmoor Academy and 1st Murton Scouts team.

Both of the groups worked very hard and raised £250 and £200 respectfully with both customers and colleagues impressed with their quality bag-packing and wonderful service. Everyone at Sunderland looks forward to welcoming them back for more support.

After establishing a partnership with The Bradley Lowery Foundation in December for our gift aid nomination, we've been doing everything we can to support this wonderful charity and all the work they're doing.

As well as supporting them via hosting in store volunteering events and tombolas, we wanted to show our support with a donation of snacks and a football activity set for their upcoming sports events.

Established in honour of Bradley Lowery, the charity continues to have an active presence in the sports scene as it was something Bradley himself always loved and in his name children continue to enjoy sports and health care. So far this year we've raised over £350 working with The Bradley Lowery Foundation.

We made a visit to a new charity partner called Love, Amelia which provides much-needed supplies to families and parents who are currently struggling.

Everyone at the Sunderland store wanted to do their part to make them feel welcomed, with managers, George staff and other colleagues sharing their stories of what Love, Amelia has done and why it's important for us to support them as part of our community.

We also donated stock to the charity – toiletries, food and baby clothes will all be put to very good use thanks to those at Love Amelia. We hope to continue our support with more volunteering days and stock for such a wonderful cause.
