Ahead of Thursday's Town Council vote on whether to support a second paid town centre car park on the current Clare Social Club site, we wanted to understand how busy the existing car park actually is.

So we submitted a Freedom of Information request to West Suffolk Council, who manage the car park payments for the Trust.

The result was that they provided granular data on:

* 87,634 parking sessions
* 2 full years of parking data: time, day, date, ticket length etc...
* Every ticket machine and RingGo transaction

This isn't a survey. It isn't opinion. It isn't a snapshot taken on a quiet Tuesday morning.

It is the actual parking data from West Suffolk Council who manage the car park payments on behalf of Clare Castle Country Park Trust.

Some of the key findings:

โ€ข Average occupancy: ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ“.๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ• ๐ฏ๐ž๐ก๐ข๐œ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ (๐Ÿ’๐ŸŽ.๐Ÿ”% ๐œ๐š๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ)

โ€ข Average peak-hour occupancy (12pm-2pm): ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ“.๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ“ ๐ฏ๐ž๐ก๐ข๐œ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ (๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ.๐Ÿ% ๐œ๐š๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ)

โ€ข Average Saturday occupancy: ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ.๐Ÿ’ ๐ฏ๐ž๐ก๐ข๐œ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ (๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ—.๐Ÿ”% ๐œ๐š๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ)

โ€ข The car park operated ๐›๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŽ% ๐œ๐š๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฑ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ“% of open hours.

โ€ข Even on Saturdays, it only gets to 90% capacity for just ๐Ÿ”.๐Ÿ’% ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž

We are not suggesting that parking isn't important.

Nor are we suggesting there are never busy periods.

However, on Thursday, Clare Town Council will be asked to vote on Motion 5.1b:

"To consider that the Council agrees to support the provision of a new town centre car park on land currently occupied by the Social Club within Clare Castle Country Park."

Given the significance of that decision, we believe residents should have the opportunity to see the actual parking data evidence, and make up their own minds.

Some supporting graphs are included in this post.

Has the need for a second paid town centre car park been clearly demonstrated?

Clare Social Club is now officially an Asset of Community Value! ๐ŸŽ‰

We are delighted to share that West Suffolk Council has approved our nomination, and formally listed Clare Social Club as an Asset of Community Value (ACV).

This is recognition of the people, friendships, activities and community spirit that have made the club an important part of Clare for almost 80 years.

In reaching their decision, West Suffolk Council considered the role the club plays in supporting the social wellbeing and social interests of the local community. From bingo, quizzes, darts and live music, to strength and balance sessions, family events and simply providing a welcoming place to meet friends, the club continues to be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Whilst ACV status does not guarantee the future of the site or prevent alternative uses from being proposed/explored, it is an important acknowledgement of the value that the club brings to the community today.

We would like to thank everyone who supported the nomination, including those who provided letters of support and shared their experiences of the club in our usage survey. This recognition belongs to all of you.

Here's to the next chapter of Clare Social Club!!

Clare Social Club Usage survey and support insight #4

Our recent survey showed something we already suspected. Clare Social Club is not just a place for events and activities. For many people, it is a centrally located and easily accessible place to meet friends, feel part of the community, and avoid isolation.

Survey Respondents:

1) Around half were aged 65+.
2) 60%+ visit weekly or more often.
3) Dozens of comments highlighted friendship, wellbeing, mental health, combatting isolation and community connection.

A few anonymous comments here:

* โ€œI live here on my own and the social club offers a safe and friendly place to meet other people. A real hub of the communityโ€

* โ€œIt is my main way to meet friends and have a laugh which is important for my mental health as well as physical.โ€

* โ€œvery beneficial for mental health and combatting lonelinessโ€

* โ€œFor some people this is their only source of daytime socialising.โ€

* "Itโ€™s a valuable asset to the town , the people who run it are friendly and I feel as a single lady I can go there on my own for company"

The survey results suggest that Clare Social Club currently serves a an important role, particularly for older residents seeking regular social contact, community activities and a welcoming indoor meeting place in the heart of our town.

Thank you again to everyone who took part in the survey and shared their views.

Clare Social Club, at the Heart of the Community.

Clare Social Club Usage survey and support insight #3

The overwhelming majority of respondents (83%) answered: No

To be clear, this isn't about saying Clare Social Club is "better" than any other business or organisation. Clare is fortunate to have many fantastic clubs, groups and venues, many volunteer led like us.

What respondents appear to be agreeing with is that Clare Social Club provides a unique combination of activities and facilities all under one roof.

On a regular basis we host:
๐ŸŽฏ Darts
๐ŸŽณ Bowls
๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Bingo
๐Ÿ“ Quiz Nights
๐ŸŽค Live Music
๐Ÿง˜ Tai Chi
๐Ÿ’ช Strength & Balance
๐ŸŽญ Community Groups
๐Ÿ’ƒ Social Events

We can do so, because our facilities include; a large hall, dance floor, licensed bar, a substantial seating area, dedicated activity spaces for darts, fixed media area for Quiz and Bingo and we have disabled accessible amenities.

It is this combination of activities, facilities and social connection that makes Clare Social Club such an important hub for community life in Clare.

Thank you again to everyone who took part in the survey and shared their views.

Clare Social Club, at the Heart of the Community.

โค๏ธ COMMUNITY. FRIENDSHIP. FAMILY. WELLBEING. FUN. โค๏ธ

Over the past few weeks, Clare Social Club has been running a usage and support survey, to better understand how people use our club, and what the club means to the people of Clare and the surrounding villages.

One of the things we created from the written responses was this โ€œword cloudโ€.

A word cloud is generated by analysing all of the words and phrases people used in their comments. The words that appear the most often become larger and more prominent within the image.

What really moved us was that none of these words were chosen by us. They came organically from people who USE our club.

Words like:
Atmosphere
Friends
Community
Company
Mental Health
Benefit
Local
Socialise
Hub
Safe
Families
Love

Again and again, people described the Social Club not simply as a building, but as a place that brings people together.

A place where friendships are formed. Where people feel less isolated. Where clubs, groups and events help support wellbeing and community life. Where all generations can come together.

The response to the survey has honestly been overwhelming and incredibly humbling for our committee.

Thank you to every single person who has taken the time to complete the survey, leave comments, share memories and support the club.

Over the coming weeks weโ€™ll be sharing more findings, stories and insights from the survey, helping to shine a light on the many different ways Clare Social Club continues to support our wonderful community as an Asset Of Community Value.

Thank you for being part of it.
