Are they having a Blue Sunday after a wild Saturday night? A young friend recently observed that blue flowers are like crack to bees!

Blue is indeed a big draw to these busy creatures. We see large numbers on the borage, cornflowers, globe thistle and these flowering globe artichoke heads. They seem to be particularly mesmerised by such beautiful displays, often sleeping overnight, head down in the artichokes, true festival style!

And apparently nature has a plan: blue flowers often have more nectar to feed the bees; and the petals have tiny patterns to guide them in whilst the bees have vision geared towards spotting the blue hue

When I see our Red Devon cattle with this parched backdrop I think of the millions of bison that inhabited the North American grasslands. When allowed to roam freely they act as ecological engineers, eating the native grasses and allowing the flowers to find a foothold. When managed in the right way our cattle will do the same. But it comes at a cost: not overstocking and constantly moving them to replicate nature’s wisdom. This effectively equates to a smaller income for more work. Maybe we are mad. But we are also passionate about nature conservation, animal welfare and ethically produced food.

After three years away travelling and working in the Southern Hemisphere we are delighted to have our son Will home for the summer. And he bought some Australasian skills with him, getting straight to grips shearing our sheep! The visit home very happily coincides with our daughter Thea’s long student holiday. It was a joy working with them both today as we gathered all that is flourishing in the market garden. And feeling a quiet parental pride watching our farm boy and girl also flourish into hardworking, fun loving young adults ❤️

Fresh beef in the shop this weekend 💃💃

Perfect for cracking out the BBQ…sausages, burgers and steaks all waiting for you. If you haven’t tried it before, a flat iron steak cooked over flame is utterly delicious (remember to let it rest for a good 5 mins after cooking).

Lost horse shoes. Lucky for some!

Lymburghs Farm welcomed D.I.G. Metal Detectorists today. Despite the dry ground making for less conductivity there were still some interesting finds including the brass horn tip cover in the second photo. This is probably an eighteen century example used to help protect the horn tips and for cattle handling safety.
There were also lead bag ties and several coins, including this George V one, a couple of older silver specimens and weirdly an American ten cents from 1822! Have to wonder how this ended up buried in a field in North Dorset. Any ideas? ☀️
