The Boatshed has enjoyed a great reputation for many years and is one of the most popular restaurants in Stornoway for local residents, as well as visiting guests. s is placed on using the best fresh local produce available. Meat from traditional local butchers includes Lewis lamb, raised naturally on island crofts, while venison comes from local hunting estates. Fish and shellfish from the seas around the Outer Hebridean islands is landed within sight of the hotel. Local scallops are hand-dived and langoustines caught in creels – kinder than trawling and, we believe, providing a better taste. Of course, providing cuisine of this quality means that we’re not offering the lowest prices in town, but most of our guests agree that dining at the Boatshed represents good value locally – and local residents keep returning for more. The menu changes often, reflecting the seasons and the availability of produce, with every dish promising a special dining pleasure. For example, when a local fishing boat lands a monkfish, that might well appear on the evening’s special menu.

Our Managing Director recently wrote a piece for Scotland on Sunday highlighting the challenges facing the hospitality sector due to the UK’s high VAT rate.

Tourism is vital to the Western Isles, supporting local jobs, businesses and communities. Yet hospitality businesses across the UK continue to operate with one of the highest VAT rates in Europe, making it harder to compete, invest and grow.

Staff Spotlight 🌟

We are pleased to shine a spotlight on two of our amazing team members, Melissa and Gillian, who were both recently promoted to assistant managers at the Royal Hotel.

Melissa has been a key part of the team for five years, initially joining us as a receptionist, before progressing to head receptionist and now into management. Her favourite part of the job is creating memorable experiences for guests and connecting with people from all over the world. If you're dining at The Boatshed, Melissa will always recommend the monkfish!

Gillian has been another dedicated part of the team for the past three years. Gillian values the close-knit team at the Royal Hotel, one that has become more like a family. When it comes to the menu, her top choice is the langoustines.
