🇬🇷 Greek fact of the week: the average Greek uses ten times more olive oil than the average Brit. 🫒

That is about 10 litres a person every year, the highest of any country according to the International Olive Council. In Britain it is around one litre.

Extra virgin is the top grade: pressed from olives with no chemicals and no refining, with acidity no higher than 0.8%. About three quarters of the olive oil Greece produces makes that grade.

🦐 Dish of the day: Seafood kritharoto, Κριθαρότο θαλασσινών.

Greek orzo cooked slowly like a risotto in a rich shrimp bisque, then finished with mussels and chargrilled shrimps. Kritharaki, the Greek name for orzo, comes from krithari, barley, because every grain looks like one. 🇬🇷🍋

Kleftiko comes from κλέφτης, thief. The klefts were Greek mountain fighters, and the story goes they sealed stolen lamb in a pit and buried it, so no smoke would rise and give their position away. It took hours. That was rather the point.

Ours comes out of the oven the same way, slow: lamb with potatoes, garlic, tomato, feta and thyme, in a nest of filo pastry. 🔥
