Asda customer Darren has a personal reason for supporting the 30th anniversary celebrations for Tickled Pink – he’s had breast cancer himself. 🎀

Darren said: "Being a being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen.”

He is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! 💗

As part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of our Tickled Pink breast cancer charity campaign Sam is taking on a "triple no ni**le challenge" to raise awareness and inspire people to check themselves.

At 19, Sam was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy to her chest. While the treatment saved her life, radiotherapy increased their risk of developing breast cancer later in life. She underwent a risk reduction double mastectomy in April 2025 and says that for her, it was the right decision. Now 32, she has tackled the London Marathon, Chase the Sun, a 205-mile cycle ride between sunrise and sunset, and a two-mile Swim Serpentine challenge in London – raising money for our charity partner CoppaFeel!. Sam took on all of her three challenges topless to start conversations, challenge perceptions and show that her body is strong and valid.

She said: "It's liberating! I'm doing them all topless to show off the scars. I want people to be able to advocate for themselves, go to the GP and, seeing my chest, think, 'I should probably check my chest, there's a bit of a lump, go get it checked out. I don't want to get scars like that.' I think it's beautiful, this survivor's body I live in and I'm really proud of it. But I know there'll be some people that feel differently, they might see that and go "I should get that little lump checked" and that's what I'm doing. I've lived through all that rubbish so that I can try and turn it into something good. I wanted to do something bold and brave and give people an opportunity to see it."

Sam also has a message for Asda customers: "Happy 30th birthday to Tickled Pink. What you guys have been doing over the years is amazing. I've been seeing that messaging since I was a kid and you know when Asda turns pink everybody knows about it. It's such a great platform to raise that awareness and raise that message and get people checking their chests and advocating for themselves and raising money for vital things like Breast Cancer Now and everything they do and CoppaFeel! and everything they do. So thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

Our local singing group ‘Feel Good Voices’ has been awarded £500 from the Asda Foundation under the Better Together Fund - this grant supports groups in our local community, helping them bring people together to help reduce loneliness and isolation.

None of this happens without the incredible energy of Vicky – bright clothes, bright hair, brightest smile and kindest heart, she lights up every session and makes everyone feel at home.

Singing? No experience needed! Just turn up, join in, sing like no ones listening, dance like no ones watching (if able) , laugh, chat over a cuppa and a slice of cake – and leave with a spring in your step 💛 It’s simple, it’s joyful, it’s just fabulous.

I’ve been to a few of the sessions now (and I definitely can’t sing) but I can honestly say what an uplifting group, hence why I nominated them for this grant opportunity. It was my absolute pleasure to present a cheque at their session on Friday morning. Well done Vicky and all the group! Thank you Asda Foundation for supporting such a fabulous group.

It was a privilege to support the Breast Cancer Now Afternoon Tea. It was such a fantastic family fun day, filled with laughter, raffles, games, crafts and, most importantly, an incredible community spirit. 💗

A huge thank you to everyone that made this happen, to the amazing team of volunteers that worked hard to put such an event together with the hours of prep behind the scenes - what a fab team we were, to local businesses who donated raffle prizes, and everyone who came along and supported us.

Together we raised an incredible £1,200 for Breast Cancer Now! 🎉

So much hard work, generosity and kindness went into making the day so special — and together we really did make a difference. 💕🎀

Well done, Charles!

Well done, Charles!

Our colleague Charles has been going out of his way to put smiles on the faces of customers at our Shirley store in the West Midlands since the day it opened 12 years ago – with customers telling us that his willingness to help and big beaming smile make him a joy to be around.

Charles was recently presented with an Asda award for his excellent customer service. He said: "I'm a people person and love interacting with customers. I'm usually on kiosk so I'm one of the first people customers see when they come into the store. I like to be happy and friendly, it's just the way I am. I like to make our customers happy If I can. There are a lot of regular customers who come in and always have a good natter with me. It's a very friendly store and what I really like about the job is the diversity – no two days are the same. It's really nice getting an award, but really I'm just doing my job."

Customers have been telling us what a star he is. Shearine said: “I’m a local resident, my terrace house backs onto Asda. I have been frequently shopping at Asda Parkgate coming up to 12 years now and in that time I have had the pleasure to get to know Charles, he is such a lovely person. He is also very helpful and always has a joke or two to brighten up your day. He always has a kind world to say about others." Mark said: “Charles is always a friendly and welcoming face, and makes an effort to say hello to me and my disabled daughter … even when he is clearly busy. His warm approach and high level of customer service goes a long way, helping make shopping a calmer experience. A true standout example of how a small act of kindness goes a long way." Phillip called him "A true master of customer services" and another customer, also called Philip, said: "Charles makes shopping at Asda a happy experience.”

The store's community champion Sally said: "Charles is often on the kiosk and he's generally the first person customers see when they come in see. He's always cheery. Everyone knows him for his kindness, patience, and genuine care – and cheeriness. What makes this even more special is that Charles doesn’t do it for recognition – it’s simply who he is. We are so proud and lucky to have him as part of our Asda Shirley family."

At Asda Shirley, we have a permanent food donation trolley at the front of our store, which is emptied every week to support a local food bank - Narthex Sparkhill Foodbank.

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the food bank to see first-hand what happens to the donations our amazing customers give.

It was such a valuable experience and gave me a much better understanding of the incredible work they do. I also learnt which items they receive plenty of and, just as importantly, the essential items they are often short of.Following my visit, I invited a fantastic team of food bank volunteers into store to hold a food drive, giving them the opportunity to speak directly with customers about the items that are most needed. The response from our community was simply amazing!

Together, we collected an incredible 210kg of food donations – the equivalent of £497, which will help provide around 315 meals for people in our local community. What an incredible achievement for a Monday! It really shows the power of our community coming together with such kindness, generosity and compassion.A huge thank you to every single customer who donated, to our wonderful food bank volunteers, and to our brilliant Asda Shirley colleagues for supporting the event.

Every donation, no matter how big or small, makes a real difference.Together, we’re helping to support local families when they need it most.

It was a pleasure to visit KH Community Basketball club and present them with a £1,000 grant from the Asda Foundation.

From the moment I arrived at the club I could feel the strong sense of community that runs through the club. Offering opportunities for young people, men and women, it’s much more than just a sports club. After chatting with families during a match, I discovered that many of the moms and dads are also part of teams – not just their children! The dedication of the volunteers like Michael who give their time to support players of all ages is truly inspiring. They have created an inclusive environment where sport brings the whole community together.

In recognition of the incredible work being done to support local families and create opportunities through sport, I wanted to further celebrate their efforts, by presenting the club with a family ticket to the Festival of Sport at the Packington Esatate, giving them more chance to enjoy sport together. Congratulations to Michael and everyone involved with the club – your hard work is making a real difference in the community.

I had the pleasure of supporting the Shirley Royal British Legion as they marked Armed Forces Day with the raising of the flag in Shirley Park.Being situated right alongside the park, we were delighted to be part of this special community event, which brought together local residents, dignitaries, veterans, and school children to show their support and appreciation for our Armed Forces.

Following the flag-raising ceremony, everyone gathered back at the Shirley Royal British Legion for refreshments kindly supplied by Asda Shirley. It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the occasion, including The Mayor of Solihull - Sardul Singh Marwa, Councillor - Karen Grinsell, and the children from Kingswood School.A huge thank you to the Shirley Royal British Legion for organising such a meaningful event and to everyone who attended to honour the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces community.

A heartfelt and huge congratulations to Clare on a truly incredible achievement!

Not only has she successfully completed her personal Couch to 5K challenge, demonstrating remarkable determination, commitment, and resilience every step of the way, but she has also raised an outstanding £700 for Tickled Pink.

Clare’s dedication to her fitness journey and her generosity in supporting such a meaningful cause is genuinely inspiring. Every mile she ran and every pound she raised reflects her passion, perseverance, and kindness, and will help make a real difference to others. This achievement is about so much more than reaching a finish line—it’s a wonderful reminder of what can be accomplished with heart, hard work, and a desire to help others.

Clare, a GM colleague, here at Asda Shirley has every reason to feel immensely proud of herself, and we couldn’t be more delighted to celebrate her success.Well done, Clare – what an amazing accomplishment!

It was fantastic to attend the Silhill FC’s presentation evening. From the moment I arrived, everyone made me feel incredibly welcome, and before they kicked off with the trophy presentations, I proudly presented a cheque for £1,000 to support an incredible initiative for young people within grassroots football.

The funding, provided through the Young Futures Fund from the Asda Foundation, will go towards referee courses for 13, 14 and 15-year-olds who volunteer their own time around the club — whether that’s helping younger teams, assisting on match days, or giving back to the football community. In return, they are given the opportunity to gain an official referee qualification.

It’s brilliant to see a club investing in young people, helping to develop confidence, leadership and life skills both on and off the pitch. A fantastic project and one I’m proud to support.

Well done to everyone involved 👏⚽.- Sally, Asda community champion

We’re delighted to share that the Asda Foundation is supporting the fabulous Aairon from Food For Thought and bringing his incredible kitchen expertise to the community through his brilliant Neuro Bites sessions for youngsters, particularly those home schooled or who are neurodivergent.

These relaxed, welcoming cookery demonstrations explore how simple food choices can support mood, focus and emotional wellbeing — all while making cooking approachable, enjoyable and full of flavour.

The sessions included:🥚 Eggs & Energy 🍫 Chocolate & Comfort🥘 Leftover Lab.And of course… I had to attend the chocolate one 😜 where we learnt where chocolate comes from, how it makes us feel and we even got to make our own chocolate bar. These sessions create such a positive space for learning, connection and wellbeing through food, I’m so glad I could support this fabulous work 💚.
