"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. πŸŽ€

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. πŸ’—

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

πŸ’— This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.πŸ’•

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

Swale Stroke group celebrated in style by having a 15 year anniversary party.

The group formed in 2011 and has been going strong ever since. The group runs every Thursday from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Hope Street community Centre in Sheerness. To celebrate this milestone members and invited guests were treated to an afternoon of good entertainment, good food and good company.

Many of the members brought their certificates, medals and trophies to showcase their achievements since having strokes.

Volunteering at this amazing group is very rewarding and the friendships I’ve made in the last 15 years will last a lifetime.

I have been volunteering with Swale stroke group for the past 15 years since it started and enjoy supporting the group every week.

One of the lovely members, Archie, has been going to the group since the beginning and celebrated his 80th birthday last week. His friends at the group organised a birthday surprise for him which included a lovely cake.Asda Sittingbourne donated a hamper for their big weekly raffle and Archie was the lucky winner. I look forward to celebrating the next 15 years with the group.– Claire, Asda community champion

It was absolutely brilliant to attend the Ksent Games Festival of Sport at Medway Park The games included over 25 SEN schools from all over Kent who took part in various activities including judo, table cricket, curling, boxing and wheelchairbasketball. We donated an assortment of fresh fruit for the children to keep them energised and I also promoted healthy eating and more ideas to keep active. – Claire, Asda community champion

I absolutely love my job and especially when I get to entertain and make my community happy.

Everyone at the Sheppey Blind Club had an afternoon of karaoke fun, singing along to hits from the 40s, 50s and 60s while reliving memories from those decades . The karaoke machine was purchased from funding given out by the Asda Foundation around 10 years ago and it still gets lots of use.

I had the most amazing and informative day at the launch of the Festival of Sheppey.

I was joined by local community leads including our local MP for Swale Kevin McKenna, Swale Mayor Derek Carnell and the inspirational Jennie Hurkett, who organised the month-long festival.

We had some wonderful historical talks and a walk around Bluetown ending at the Criterion Theatre for tea and gypsy tarts donated by our Asda in Sittingbourne. The island has so much history so visit the various museums to find out all about it.

I had the most amazing day in our local Community running a tombola for our local Swale dementia action alliance.

I spoke to many people about dementia, signposting them to local charities and organisations as fundraising for the group.
