Doug was up and out extremely early this morning (early for a bartender anyway!) to talk with Ellie Colton on BBC Sheffield 🎧

The topic was of course that amazing story about our old pub sign returning to us from Brooklyn, New York! We’d like to once again thank Peter and Ann for returning it home ❤️

Link in the comments, listen in from around 07:50!

We were thrilled to be contacted recently by a lovely couple with an intruguing story about a very well travelled piece of Sheffield history.

Peter & Ann were stunned to find this very sign hanging in a friends appartment, in the same building that they lived. What was especially surprising was that this was in Brooklyn, NYC in the early 00s!

Ann recognised it immediately as having come from the pub where she'd enjoyed many a lager and lime, on the way home from her course at the University of Sheffield in the late 70s.

What are the odds?!?

We understand their neighbour purchased it from a pre-loved Antique/Ephemera style store in the early 2000s in Manhattan.

They were gifted it and repatriated it back to the UK on their return to Leeds, where it has been on display and has moved with them numerous times.

Now that they no longer have the space, they have very generously returned it all the way home to Sheffield, where it will once again take pride of place at The Hallamshire House.

These lovely people simply requested Thornbridge make a charitable donation in their honor, so not only did it come home, Sheffields Childrens Hospital will benefit too.

How the sign came to be in New York at all, we have no idea? When was it replaced? Also, no idea. We have so many images of the pub throughout the years, and the sign was in situ, but if anyone remembers it being take down/swapped/stollen we'd love to fill in some blanks.

We had such a great time hearing its' story and current landlord Doug, and previous Landlord Les were here to welcome it back into the fold.

If you happen to know even part of the story, we’d love you to get in touch. As soon as the sign is hanging (indoors, due to its' age) we will make sure to let you know!
