Sea mist forms when warm, moist air moves over cooler seawater. As the air cools, the moisture condenses into tiny droplets, creating a low layer of mist above the sea.

A new tribute to St Ives’ maritime heritage has arrived...

The St Ives Mariners Memorial was installed this morning at the landward end of Smeaton’s Pier. Created by local sculptor Tom Leaper, the life-size bronze sculpture, titled Landing the Catch, depicts two fishermen at work and honours the generations of mariners, fishermen and boatbuilders who helped shape the town we know today.

Standing in a fitting position overlooking the harbour and bay, the memorial creates a lasting connection between St Ives’ rich fishing history and its renowned artistic heritage.

Pictured are sculptor Tom Leaper and Catherine Cooper from Visit St Ives;

Catherine was lucky enough to see Tom creating the sculpture in his studio, making it particularly special to join him at the memorial today.
