🎨 The Air of Ideas is a fascinating pop-up exhibition presented by renowned East London gallerist Kate MacGarry. Installed across two ground-floor rooms, the show brings together a rotating selection of emerging and established artists from the gallery’s roster. Among them is Hastings-based Mark Corfield-Moore, whose large-scale paintings draw on textile techniques to explore cultural identity and intergenerational language. A huge congratulations to all of the winners of the Rye Society of Artists’ 75th Summer Exhibition. 🎉

We were delighted to sponsor this landmark exhibition with £1,000 in prize money, celebrating the incredible creativity and talent of our local artistic community.

Congratulations to Stephen Duffy, Georgie Watson, Heather Collins and Matt Hardman on your well-deserved awards – and thank you to every artist who entered and helped make this year’s exhibition so inspiring.

If you haven’t visited yet, there’s still plenty of time. The exhibition runs until 31 August and is open daily, 10.30am–5pm, at the Rye Community Centre.

It’s a wonderful exhibition to explore and many of the artworks are also available to purchase, making it a fantastic opportunity to take home something truly special while supporting local artists.

Kate Daniels and Nils Solberg return to the Courtyard (weather willing) to play some jazz that sizzles and soothes in equal measure.

Kate sings with “the cool, smoky laid back approach of say, a Julie London or a Jeri Southern with a sprinkling of Peggy Lee..” according to Lance Liddle, editor one of the world’s Top 10 Jazz Blogs, Bebop Spoken Here.

While Nils Solberg is a guitarist and vocalist who has played with the likes of Bryan Ferry, Nigel Kennedy and Ralph McTell.

In case you live under a non-fabric obsessed rock, are a local fabric shop in Rye but they are so much more than that.

Through making with our hands, we build value and a relationship with the tools and materials that creates a respect for the materials and history of the craft.

Sewing has the ability to create community and improve well-being. We want to inspire others to choose a slower and more considered approach to dressing yourself and your home.”

This is a beautiful mission we wholeheartedly support at The George.

And we were very excited to join them recently for their Launch of ‘Workwear’ - a book illustrating “the eternal relevance and versatility of traditional workwear shapes and detailing. These simple everyday garments are clothes not fashion, living outside the fast and careless, trend-led landscape.”

The book is written in conversation “with makers of varying disciplines, from weaving to wood turning. These makers model the patterns and tell us a little of their story and their craft.”

We highly recommend exploring the Merchant & Mills way of life and heading to their beautiful shop when you visit Rye.

The beaches in Rye and Winchelsea are primarily shingle at high tide, which then give way to vast, flat sand at low tide.

This dynamic is shaped by centuries of coastal erosion, strong winds, and everyone’s favourite geography GCSE process... longshore drift!

Did you know... centuries ago, the Great Storm of 1287 radically altered this landscape, destroying the original coastal town of Old Winchelsea and shifting the River Rother’s estuary? So much so that historic coastal forts like Camber Castle, now sit two miles inland.

In this beautiful weather we’re having, we’re making the most of our close proximity to the sea and taking lots of dips!

What makes a hotel memorable?

In the latest edition of our Notes on Design series, we’re delighted to sit down with our friend Atlanta Bartlett—interior designer, stylist and bestselling author whose beautifully considered interiors have inspired homes for decades and who we’ve known since we first arrived in Rye.

Here Atlanta answers three questions we wanted to hear her perspective on. We talk about designing through all the senses, embracing happy accidents, celebrating personal history, welcoming the unexpected, and the importance of building layers.

Atlanta’s latest book, The Romantic Minimalist, explores how simplicity and warmth can sit beautifully side by side, creating homes with soul, character and a lasting sense of calm.
