It is with mixed emotions that we announce that we’re leaving the Queen Vic, and this weekend will be our last full weekend of trading.
Our Landlords have refused to renew our lease, and after ten years of constant battles with them, we simply aren’t in a position to fight them any more.
We love our pub, and the fantastic little community that’s grown up around it, but while in the eight years pre-pandemic we made our landlords upwards of half a million pounds of clear profit, and despite working hundred hour weeks and putting our heart and soul into the business, all we’ve made is debt.
We will be heartbroken to leave behind some of the amazing people we’ve met here, and we know we’ve created a unique environment that will be sorely missed by them. But to do that we know we’ve put a lot of noses out of joint. Our basic rules of respecting us, respecting each other, and respecting the building that’s our home, has made a pub that’s a safe haven from the madness of the outside world. But the flip side is that an awful lot of people who don’t understand the basic principles of civilised behaviour found we had a low tolerance for rudeness, and we’re sure there are a few hands being rubbed in glee at this news. However, we merely take that as a mark of success that bullying and entitlement should not be allowed in a true community pub.
We have absolutely loved our time in Rottingdean – it’s an amazing village with some amazing people. However, we’ve experienced some pretty shocking homophobia here – like nothing I’ve seen since leaving school, and worse than anything Philip’s ever experienced. But we’re immensely proud of what we’ve done in the pub and in the community, and we leave with our heads held high.
We have no idea what will be happening to the pub after we leave. After decades of neglect the building needs serious work to make it safe for any new tenants. We have little faith in our landlords to protect the history that’s held here, so we’ll be making sure that the little treasure trove of artefacts from the pub’s past will be looked after safely.
We’ll be opening as normal this coming weekend – Thursday the 4th to Sunday the 7th August – then on the evening of Saturday 13th August for a ‘drink us dry’ farewell session.
We’re leaving the pub jobless, homeless, and broke, but after a decade of battling the corporate machine that is our money-grabbing landlords, whatever the future is can only be brighter than the last few years. A huge thank you to all our supporters over the years. We don’t currently know where we’ll be ending up, but we hope to stay in the area, so we hope to see you all again soon.
