What are the Yamas & Niyamas?

Have you ever heard the words...
Yamas and Niyamas?

These simple principles sit at the heart of yoga philosophy.

They're not rules.

They're gentle guides.

Ideas that encourage compassion, honesty, contentment, self-reflection and kindness.
Ancient wisdom...

That still feels incredibly relevant today.

✨ NEW CLASS COMING TO ROADE – BARREBOOST ✨

Fancy trying something a little different?

We’re introducing BarreBoost, a lovely new Thursday morning class at The Roade House, combining elements of ballet, barre, jazz and yoga-inspired movement — but please don’t be put off by the word ballet! You absolutely do not need to be a dancer.
Led by experienced dance teacher Sam, BarreBoost is all about moving your body in a way that helps you feel stronger, more balanced, more coordinated and a little taller and more confident in the way you carry yourself.

We’ll use simple, easy-to-follow movements to work on:
• Strength and balance
• Posture and core control
• Mobility and flexibility
• Coordination
• Graceful, confident movement

There are no complicated dance routines to learn, no dance experience is needed and you don’t need to be flexible.

It’s simply a fun, friendly way to move your whole body, try something new and feel good afterwards.

🌿 Complete beginners are very welcome.🌿 Come on your own — lots of people do.
🌿 Friendly, relaxed studio with small classes.
🌿 No special dancewear needed — just wear something comfortable that you can move in.

BarreBoost – Thursdays at The Roade House, Roade

If you’ve been thinking you’d like to do something for yourself but the gym isn’t really your thing, this could be a lovely place to start.

The year isn’t over yet. 🌿

We do this funny thing as autumn arrives.

I’ll get back into it in January.
I’ll start exercising in the New Year.
I’ll look after myself properly after Christmas.
But why wait?

There are still nearly three whole months of this year left.

Three months to get stronger:
To improve your flexibility and balance.
To move more freely.
To reduce stress.
To find something you genuinely enjoy doing.

And there’s so much happening at The Roade House Yoga Studio now.

We have over 14 classes every week, from gentle yoga and relaxation to stronger movement and strength-based sessions — and we’re growing again with our new Pregnancy Yoga and BalletBoost classes.

Then there are our Sound Baths, Gong Baths, Masterclasses and Retreat Days for when you want something a little bit more.
Strength. Flexibility. Movement. Relaxation. Stress reduction.

All in one place, in a small, friendly studio right here in Roade.

And you don’t have to overhaul your life to begin. Start with one class. One hour. One small promise to yourself each week.

By the time January arrives, you won't be thinking about starting.

You’ll already have started. 🌿

Our Wellness Membership is currently £42.50 a month, giving you up to two sessions each week.
From 1st December, the price for new members will increase to £50 a month — so if you’ve been thinking about joining us, now is a rather good time.
Perhaps October can be your January this year.

One final breath in… one final breath out.

If you've practised yoga with me, you've probably heard me say this quite a lot.

Usually when you're in Chair Pose, Warrior, Plank — or another pose where your muscles have started to make their presence known!

There's actually a reason I sometimes ask you to stay for those few extra seconds.

When a movement feels relatively easy, your nervous system recruits the muscle fibres it needs to do the job.
But as those muscles begin to tire, or the position becomes more challenging, your body can recruit additional motor units to help maintain the effort.
Which means those last few seconds can be rather useful.
So when I say...

"One more breath in… one more breath out."

I'm not keeping you there simply for the sake of making it harder.
We're giving your muscles a little more reason to work.

Not until you're in pain.

Not until your form disappears.

And definitely not because I think yoga needs to feel punishing.

Just enough challenge to encourage your body to adapt.
It's one of the reasons I love using yoga as part of healthy ageing.
We can use our own body weight as resistance. Chair, Warrior, Plank, Bridge — all can challenge our muscles, and we can adjust them to suit the person on the mat that day.

And as we get older, keeping those muscles working really matters.

Not because we need bigger muscles.

Because we need useful muscles.

Muscles that help us get off the floor.
Climb the stairs.
Carry the shopping.
Catch ourselves when we stumble.
Travel, garden, walk and continue doing all the things we enjoy.

So next time your thighs start talking to you and you hear me say...

"One more breath in… one full exhalation out."
You'll know there's a little method in my madness.

We're not simply holding a yoga pose.

We're reminding our muscles that we still need them.

And I'd quite like us to keep needing them for a very long time. 🧡

🌙 Monthly Friday Night Sound Bath 🌙

Take an hour just for you.

Once a month, we come together on a Friday evening to switch off from the outside world and enjoy the calming sounds of gongs, crystal singing bowls, chimes and other beautiful instruments.

There is nothing to learn, nothing to achieve, and nothing you need to do. Simply lie down, get comfortable, and allow your mind and body to settle into a state of deep rest.

Many people come to ease stress, improve sleep, support recovery from busy lives or exercise, and simply enjoy an evening of peace before the weekend begins.
Whether you're completely new to sound baths or have joined us before, you'll receive a warm welcome.

Camino Diary 🇪🇸🥾🚲 We’ve done it…
8 days.
81 miles walking.
112 miles cycling.
193 miles of the Camino.
And we’ve done it. ❤️

I’m not quite sure how I feel yet, other than very tired, rather sore and once again completely amazed by what my body can do.
It was hard at times. Really hard. We were warned it would be.
There were long stretches when the miles seemed endless. Hills that looked enormous before we started climbing them. Aching feet, aching legs and, latterly, very sore bottoms! 😂

There were moments when spirits dipped too. But that’s where the group came in.
Someone would make you laugh. Someone would offer encouragement. Food would be shared. We’d regroup at a café. Paul would invent a song and dance routine 😂… and somehow we’d all get going again.

That sense of community has been such a huge part of these eight days. Walking together, cycling together, occasionally separating and finding each other again. New friendships, old friendships, conversations that filled miles, and plenty of laughter.

And my Spanish has improved immensely! 🇪🇸 Although necessity is apparently a very good language teacher. 😂

There’s been yoga in there too, although not always on a mat. Breathing when something felt difficult. Moving an aching body at the end of a long day. Staying with something when my mind was telling me it was too hard.

One more breath in. One more breath out.

And keep going.

It’s amazing how much can happen in just eight days.

When we first started this journey in France two years ago, the goal was simply to conquer the Pyrenees. We never really imagined how far along the Camino we would eventually get.

And now conversations have started about whether we might actually continue…and finish it.

But that decision can wait.

Right now everything hurts, we’re exhausted, and I think we need a little time to let this adventure sink in.
For now…
193 miles. Two feet. Two wheels. Eight days. And some wonderful people to share it with.
What an adventure. ❤️🇪🇸

Buen Camino.

Camino Diary 🇪🇸🚲 54 miles…

Today I am, once again, completely amazed by my body and what it is capable of.

54 miles on the bike today.

My mind saw the hills and thought oh no…

My body just got on with climbing them. 🚲

The group split at times today, but we kept finding each other again along the way — regrouping, encouraging each other and even bumping into Natasha and Richard as they continued their Camino on foot. Natasha very kindly shared some of her food with us too — much appreciated!

There were a few bike-seat adjustments as the miles added up… and eventually I resorted to strapping my jacket onto the seat for some extra padding! 😂 Needs must!

The final five miles were tough. I really had to dig deep and just keep those legs turning.

But I did it.

26 miles yesterday + 54 miles today = 80 miles cycled in two days.

Add that to the 80 miles we walked and I’ve now travelled 160 miles of the Camino under my own steam.

Two feet and two wheels. 🥾🚲

Tonight I’m tired, sore, and incredibly grateful for what this body can do. ❤️
