Plants vs plastic: The theme for this year's Earth Day, but something we should be conscious of and actively improving every day. The amount of plastics that is being used in our day to day products is significantly impacting our health and our planet.

We are so happy to see small independent businesses trying to do as much as they can to reduce plastic usage and waste, by offering refill products, using environmentally friendly packaging, and so much more.

Easy ways to change your daily impact could be: carrying reusable bags with you or using paper ones (even better!), swapping your tupperwear/coffee cup/sandwich bags for reusable non-plastic options, and buying produce that is not packaged in plastic. But there are sooo many more options.

Want to do something different? Support other businesses by buying local, visit from or join our beach clean on Sunday 5th of May (more information to follow).

Is a new product on the horizon? 👀

Looking for more environmentally friendly options in the coffee industry, we have been experimenting with reusable coffee pods for Nespresso type machines.

Some companies offer compostable ones or a recylce option, but truthfully not much can be recycled! In February 2023, roughly 576,000 metric tons of waste are solely from coffee pods 😱 (source: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/environment/2023/feb/10/single-use-coffee-pod-environment-impact-better)

When we started, there weren't many options, but more and more companies are seeing the benefits and are producing alternatives. We haven't found the perfect one yet, but when we do our aim is to stock these as our ground coffee can be used to filled the reusable pods.

Who's ready for (beach) clean season?!

We're almost coming out of the rainiest winter ever, meaning the wet and dark days are almost behind us. We haven't been able to organise any beach cleans last year, so we're hoping to make up for it this year 💪

Teaming up with our buddies from (who are opening their shop on Albert Road soon!), we will soon announce some beach clean mornings where we can meet new faces, clean our community, and go for a delicious coffee or sea swim afterwards.

We haven't been planting trees...

That's right, we'll be honest about it. We were so far behind on our administration that our last donation to was in July 🙈.

A promise is a promise though, and when we say we donate a tree for every order placed with us, then that's what we'll do.

So after finally getting back on track with our administration, we donated 36 trees yesterday, where they are needed most right now (turns out that is in Ontario). 🌲

P A R A D I S E ? 🌴 ☀️

Enjoying a delicious morning cuppa or afternoon iced coffee in a tropical place like this is like being in heaven, but with sustainability in mind I can't help but feel guilty at times.

Tourism is responsible for 8% of the world's carbon emissions. This left me thinking: which ways can carbon emissions be reduced when travelling?

🚎 there are more sustainable ways to travel as an alternative to flying: busses, trains, bicycles or even walking?! I made sure I took a bus to the airport and back instead of driving. If flying, some companies offset their carbon emissions by planting trees and some websites even show you which alternative flights are more fuel efficient!

🏡 there are accommodations which are labelled as green-certified, putting effort into minimising carbon footprint. I make sure I use minimum amounts of water for showering and only use the A/C or heating when I really need it.

👣 promote small local and sustainable businesses. Here on SXM the is a must visit, which is built from sustainable materials, promoting organic gardening and using wind/solar powered energy. A second place on the island we love is the . The Ital Shack serves local organic homegrown vegetarian food and fresh local juices - and it is made with love so DELICIOUS!

2024 is the year that we start roasting. Easter time to be more specific. This means that we're going to experiment and try new flavors. To be able to do this, we have to phase out our current stock. Sadly, our Rwandan coffee beans are the first one to go.
